About the Author

The author, a 41-year-old Kentuckian and ex-Marine, started his woodsmanship training at the age of six, when his father introduced him to ginseng and small-game hunting. Studies of wildlife flora and fauna have taken the author through Mexico and Canada as well as the continental United States. By exposing himself to unnecessarily adverse conditions for the sake of obtaining understanding—by doing things most hunters would deem impractical—the author has proven his understanding of deer hunting again and again. Deer seasons found his family sacrificing so that he could spend every available moment in the woods interviewing hunters and studying deer. Regular jobs could only be taken with the understanding that during deer season, the author would not be available.

In his long field experience, the author has witnessed mistakes that take lives and create permanent disabilities. The need for public education and awareness of the functions of the deer herd and hunter population, safety and courtesy is clear. Seeing a need for a low-cost and comprehensive guide for beginning deer hunters, the author set to work at the typewriter with the goal of creating a "how to" book for the average hunter. In addition, he has taken a number of deer both large and small; zeal for deer study has sometimes kept him in the woods year-round.

Many available books on the subject of deer hunting are outdated. Modern research techniques have disproved some of the earlier theories about deer. Some of the books on the library shelf were written before the whitetail repopulated. The need to update information with modern research findings was clear. Humor was added for fun.
