Latin virtuosity,
By Rock Mendonça "Roque" (Madrid) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bamboleate (Audio CD)
I bought this album causally in Paris and i will never regret about it. Vampi Soul wanted to join for the first time ever Eddie Palmieri's piano and Tjader's vibes in a unique fusion. They asked Verve's permission to borrow Cal Tjader for the recording sessions. Verve accepted if Vampi did the same lending Palmieri. The result: two marvellous albums. "El sonido nuevo" for Verve and "Bamboleate" for Vampi Soul.
The first theme, Bamboleate, has a hot rythm that could fit perfectly at any latin disco club. The best one is Samba do Suenho. If just vibraphones had been discovered in Rio de Janeiro in the 50's or 60's one would never imagine where Samba style would have reached. Special attention at the sax solo at the end of the song: suave suave. Guajira Candela completes my hat trick of the album.

For me a difficult question, make a review. It is very personal. My taste in music developed since 1935 when I started to play the violin. Bach, Vivaldi, Kreuzer etc. I was 5. After WO 11 the American Forces brought the jazz over here. In Germany the forces transmitted from Frankfurt a programme called Bouncing in Bavaria that produced music by Count Basie, Charley Barnett, Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis, Stan Kenton, Shorty Rogers. We started to record it on disc from the radio in 1947, because it still was not available in my country, the Netherlands. Tjader played in the George Shearing Quintet at that time and started later with bringing the latin beat in the jazz. Nat Cole did it with Jack Constanza and I think Kenton brought Candido to the US. That type of music drew my attention, because it added a new element in our music. For that reason people like Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Mongo Santa Maria were very interesting and still are. Now I am a little bit older and able to buy the records that were not available that time. This Tjader/Palmieri Album, like Mambo with Tjader, replaces a 33 RPM because they are worn out after 50 years and it still is a big part of my life. Good buy! Good for the ears!
