Product Description

This striking Go board is made out of solid bamboo. It's a very elegant way to play Go, combining the strength and beauty of bamboo - a grass species with the tensile strength of iron - with the timeless game of Go, a game so complicated that it's been calculated there are more possible Go games than there are protons in the universe. This board is made of solid strips of bamboo, pressed together one layer at a time. On the underside of this Chinese standard size 19x19 board is a 13x13 quick game board.

Also so much easier to place stones on a standard sized board.

I bought this as a gift and don't know much about the game of Go myself, but I can see that the board is of nice quality and the recipient was quite happy with it.

This board is no doubt a good start -- affordable, superb quality, very solid and durable.

As a novice at go game I was looking for a set to play, good quality yet affordable. This board is no doubt a good start -- affordable, superb quality, very solid and durable. Its satin surface just makes you wish to touch it and tactile sensation is very pleasant. The drawing on the surface is also quite good -- lines are clear and accurate. I would highly recommend this board to anyone looking for a good go board to start.

If you want to experience play on a real board (as opposed to playing on the computer), this is a great board to start with. It's a good full sized board but also has the benefit of the 13x13 board on the back. Great for quick or beginner games. The style of play on a 9x9 board is so significantly different from 19x19, but 13x13 helps close that gap nicely. Board is as described and quite sturdy. My main recommendation to get this board over another is if you feel you'd have a need for the 13x13 board, either for quick play or for beginners. That makes this a perfect board for clubs and as a teaching tool.

The lines are pretty solid and straight. They are durable and do not seem to smudge or come off on my stones at all (using the yunzi stones sold by the same vendor [they go quite nicely with it] Yunzi Stones 9.2mm Jujube Bowls for Go Board Game Sets).

Book included was a freebie (though helpful for beginners), so don't give the book any weight in your decision on buying this board. This board has the above mentioned wonderful aspects to buy this board.

The board I had before this was a cheap one I bought from a game shop long ago that was 19x19 on a 12" x 12" board with small plastic stones. Play is much easier and enjoyable on a real board. Also so much easier to place stones on a standard sized board. For the price, this is a great buy. ($40 at time of review)

The board itself is very flat and stiff, as you would expect from an engineered bamboo product. The finish is somewhat scratchable, and very slippery. I suspect this board is not going to wear like solid wood, but I have not had it very long yet. That's okay, though, I got it for the playroom, so that the kids don't have to trash my good Go board. The 13x13 side is very useful for the beginners in the house. It's a good board for the price.

Just one complaint, the lines are not raised, as they would be on a traditional board. The cheap printing is probably what makes the board so affordable, though, so this is not a serious gripe. Just so that your expectations are realistic: the printing is inside the finish. There is no texture to it.

Postscript: we've had the board a few years, now, and I have added the observation that the board is very slippery. I wouldn't have predicted that this would make so much difference, but it's harder for the stones to stay put with such a low coefficient of friction. Every time someone drops a stone, it's a disaster. Also, the material has indeed proved itself less durable than wood; a fall to the floor bashed a corner in (a wooden board would not have been affected by such a fall). But, you know, you can play on it. And Go is still one of the greatest games ever.

This board is rather nice to look at and feels good to play on.

Unfortunately, while sitting on my coffee table in my living room, it somehow managed to warp and crack about four months after I bought it.

Not really worth it for the $40 I paid.

Purchased this board a couple years ago and have barely used it. It was a nice looking Go board initially. The other day I took it out of the closet (less than 2 years later) and it has severe cracks all over the bamboo on both sides. I live in Denver where it is a relatively dry climate and I assume that this may have caused the cracking. I read that bamboo processed in humid countries (i.e. China) can have issues with cracking when used in dry climates. I suppose I could have kept the board in some sort of humidifying chamber or something...but really...who wants to do that with a $40 Go Board. Not sure if solid wood boards are any better in this climate but I doubt I'll be purchasing many bamboo items in the future. I would advise you to avoid this board if you live in Colorado or any other dry climates!

I got this board in the mail yesterday along with some of the plastic stones. I was impressed with the stones for the price, but this board was not of the quality I expected. It appears that other reviewers received a board of better quality. None of the corners were perfect rectangles, but the lines veered away from straight near the corner. Nearly all of the star points were off-center, and one defect was sanded after the varnish (should have been before the varnish). I bought this board because I doubted my own ability and wanted a reference before I made a full board (I made a 9x9). I would have been satisfied with the defect being sanded after varnish (those sorts of things happen and this isn't some $600 board) if the lines were straight and star points on-center. I could have made my own for about $30, and this one was about $(40+15) shipped, but mine wouldn't have been on bamboo, and I wanted a nice reference to work from. The board itself was very nice quality (with the minor exception of the fixed defect), but the lines were very poor, and unfortunately that's the main reason I bought this board. If there were one or two defects in the lines (maybe one star-point off-center on the side, and a corner fudged), I would recommend this board for the price, as most people won't notice that, and it still provides a viable reference. But there were too many defects in mine to recommend it for the price.
