Too big for small dogs,

These are very well made clippers, sturdily built, with a sharp blade, and nice grips on the handles. The addition of a file and styptic powder were a great idea, and come in very handy. Unfortunately, the blade itself is so wide that I cannot position it well between the curved nail and the pad on my dog's little paws (and she's not even really tiny- she's 15 lbs). I tried to hold it sideways, but the angle came out all wrong, and I cut the quick a couple of times (thus, the file and styptic came in handy). For a medium-sized dog, these are great clippers, but I definitely wouldn't recommend for small or toy breeds.

Good but a few caveats...,

I ordered the small size to use on 2 dogs:
*an 11 pound Papillon mix *and a 4 pound Maltese. Pros: *gives a better, cleaner cut than the guillotine-style cutters *fairly inexpensive with good grip handles *comes with a file and styptic powder Cons: *it was still too big to use on the small Maltese. Since her nail grows sort of curved -- into the nail pad, there was no room to make a cut without either cutting her nail pad or way into the quick. I ended up using a nail file and toenail clippers on her. Alot more work but at least I was assured that her quick wouldn't get cut. *The nail file/styptic powder idea is a good one -- fits right into the handle. But lacks in practicality. The powder comes in a tiny little plastic bag that is twisted up to fit into the nail file. So after opening it, and trying to get the powder into the container was difficult. I emptied the powder onto a piece of paper and tried to use the paper as a funnel to get the powder in. Still a mess. You're better off just buying a small container of styptic powder. Also, the nail file is again, a handy idea but it's not really usable for tiny dogs because the file portion doesn't extend to the edge... All in all, I give it 3 stars because I don't think it's worth buying if you have a tiny breed (ie small Maltese) but seems to work well on the medium sized dog. I think I will look into the electrical rotary took for the little one.

As a first time dog owner, I am extremely satisfied with this clipper. It is sharp and very easy to use on my shih tzu. Each cut is very smooth and precise.

Better than guillotine,

More accurate than the guillotine style so my small dog isn't afraid to have his nails clipped any more. Works great for even my tiny Pomeranian puppy.

I finally found a dog nail clipper that is durable and does a firm cut with a very sharp blade. I feel secure when I use it on my chihuahua, because it doesn't grab on the nail and the cut is over right away. I totally recommend it!

These clippers work great, I love how it includes the styptic and a file for the nails. I haven't hit the quick, but it's nice to have that just in case!

I use these nail cutters on my Boston Terriers and they are very good. I just thought I would receive a lot more of the stypic materal.

Too large, not sharp enough,

As other reviewers have stated, these nail clippers are simply too large for even medium sized dogs. I have a 25 lb pup whose nails are impossible to cut with these clippers. They are difficult to maneuver when you are cutting anywhere near paw pads. Plus, they made my dog yelp because rather than relying on a sharp blade to cut the nails, they seem to squeeze the nail pretty hard before cutting it off. The file is too small and didn't hold up to even one round of filing. Plus one star for the convenience of the styptic powder in the handle, otherwise, I can't recommend these clippers.

I have 2 Boston Terriers - Fen - 27/28lbs,Remy - 24/25lbs
In the past we've been using the guillotine style - which has worked, until we misplaced it - we searched all over and couldn't find it so we ordered another one. I've been told this style is better than the guillotine (preferred by many pet groomers we've run into), so thought I'd give it a go, if this sucked then we'd go back to the guillotine. We got the blue one mailed to us (it's pretty looking). Like that there's a lock feature that keeps the clippers closed when not in use. The file and the powder - it's nice to have but we've never had to use it. I don't cut their nails too short, and we have an electric file that we use (makes it easier) - it's actually a people manicure set. First use - It's a little awkward to get into position to clip the dew claws (I'm right handed). It snips fast and clean. No chipped nails, no little bits left over. Very precise!! Why a 4 star - it takes a little getting used to but that's not why I gave it a 4. This is marketed towards small dogs, and although my dogs are classified as small (not toy/mini size), the clippers are still relatively large for their nails. This really looks like a regular size clipper. I wouldn't get this if your dogs are smaller than 20lbs (or their nails width are smaller than a cashew nut). For my smallest dog, we use cuticle clippers for 2 hind paws.

I have three yes three small dogs, and this has worked well for trimming their nails. I really enjoy having the extras that come with it. It's nice to know if I nic one I have what I need all right in front of me. Great product!
