Although the information is somewhat dated gives insight to the Filippino informal security structure and culture, August 25, 2005
This review is from: Banana Justice: Field Notes on Philippine Crime and Custom (Hardcover)
This was a great book with somewhat dated but still relevant information on the Philippine Security apparatus (except for the military) and culture. While some of the information was dated (such as cell phone usage) it was easily updated. This book had alot of information that you will have diffinculty finding anywhere else such as information on the CAFGU, vigilante activity to name a few areas. It also gives you a good overview on why Filippinos do what they do in certain circumstances and the culture in general. This was a great book. The only drawback was that the information even though still valid (I checked with a Filippino who had recently been to one of the locations the author stayed at)was somewhat dated. A updated addition would increase the credibility of the book to those that do not have the opportunity to actually go to the country. I would also recommend that the author write books the Philippine Security System As A Whole, Vigilanteism In The Philippines, The Philippine Culture By Region. These would be very popular books and I'm sure this author would do it right.
