Book Description

June 30, 2006

With more than 220 tasty recipes from the Philippines and other countries, Banana Leaves offers more than traditional cooking techniques. It's a book of family, love and memories. Each recipe is written from the heart - and from the experiences of growing up in the Philippines during a time of war and consequently raising a family in the United States.

Each chapter begins with one of the author's dearest memories of her family, friends and the Philippines - each stirred by the sights, smells and flavors of that chapter's recipes.

Banana Leaves features recipes of different kinds of dishes such as pancit (noodles), lumpia (spring rolls), kakanin (Filipino snacks), and more. It also offers recipes for more -common dishes like chicken, pork, beef, seafood, cookies, cakes, and even jams and marmalades - which she still makes for her family.

Most of these dishes are Filipino with a few accompanying recipes of Chinese, Spanish and Italian origin. All measurements in Banana Leaves are of the US system - since the author learned to cook here - and the ingredients are easily found in most local grocery stores or Asian markets.

"This cookbook is not about chef-style cooking...nor is it about elegant cuisine. It's a compilation of my family's cooking. It's food that we all shared with each other, our family and our friends - full of flavor and filled with memories."
Necy T. Alcuaz, Author

1.0 out of 5 stars Title does not fit , should be traditional american foods and some philippine recipes., December 27, 2008

I was very excited to order this book, but when it arrived I was very disappointed. Only the first few pages are philippine foods, after that it's 9/10ths full of traditional american foods like baked chicken, spaghetti, calzones, omelettes, oatmeal cookies. Every common cookbook has these basics. Very decieving title. lots of charming stories, but for me, it's all about the recipes & there were absolutely no photos. NOT at all as I had hoped. I lived on Guam for 4 years and had hoped to recreate some of the wonderful foods I had there. The price is way too high to not have hardly any real philippine recipes. I will be returning this one if I can. I've bought two others, Filipino homestyle dishes by Norma Olizon-Chikiamco, its small, but filled with wonderful recipes and beautiful color photos. Also, Complete Thai Cooking, ABSOLUTELY amazing recipes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Masarap (delicious, tasty, tastes good), July 19, 2010
This review is from: Banana Leaves: Filipino Cooking and Much More (Paperback)
Despite not ever trying the filipino recipes before, I found the instructions quite user friendly and the resultant dish delicious as it was enjoyed by the family. Mind you, I am Filipino and grew up in the Philippines but never did the cooking, only would bake on occasions from the Betty Crocker cookbooks as we had katulongs to do all the household chores. I truly enjoyed the book and will try more of the recipes.
