Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-KALike many of Tana Hoban's books, Banana Moon promotes the visual-literacy skill of recognizing that objects are made up of patterns and shapes. Therefore, part of one object can look like another. A sea voyage to "the land of cinnamon sand" sets the scene, as readers are encouraged to look out of the porthole. Die-cut circles show objects such as a peach, candy canes, and salt-water taffy. Turn the page and the peach becomes a rising sun, the candy canes turn into striped sails, and the salt-water taffy is the pattern on a turtle's back. The bold flat shapes stand out well against the smooth solid background shades of blue, turquoise, salmon, and yellow. The type, while always clear, whimsically takes color and even form from the objects described. For example, the words "cotton candy" are appropriately pink and puffy while "peach" is a blushing orange yellow. This simple yet attractive book makes good use of the die-cut device while effectively playing with the transformative nature of patterns.AKaren James, Louisville Free Public Library, KY

From Booklist

Ages 4^-8. Viewed through the small, round porthole of a sailing ship, pieces of the sky and ship and beach look like delicious treats; but when you turn the page and see the whole picture, then what looked like a luscious peach turns out to be a sunrise; pieces of striped candy cane are really sails; tutti frutti are fish swimming in the ocean; cotton candy is clouds; a bright banana is the moon. Preschoolers will enjoy playing the game and tricking new readers: first they view the object through a small circle cut out of a black page; then they turn the page, and there's a double-page spread in glowing color that shows how the shape has a new meaning when it is part of a whole. The contrast between the big black frame and the bright, simple handcut paper shapes reveals the fun when things are not what they seem. Children will relish noticing the same kinds of tricky distortions when they look through all kinds of openings at home and on the road. Hazel Rochman
