More About the Author

I was born. I failed Geometry. I seemed to be pretty good at writing, although I didn't always do the right assignments. Thus, I was sent to a liberal arts college and my parents gave up on me.

Now, I like to write books about quirky people who can't ever seem to say or do the right thing.

Huh. Wonder where that came from.

Courtney Von Dragen Smith thought everything was going well for her. She had a great boyfriend, a job at a cool cafe with her best friend, and a family that was somewhat average, somewhat odd (depending on the family member). Senior year was about to begin, with great promise.

Then her boyfriend went to college and broke up with her. Then her dog ran away. Repeatedly. In an effort to minimize the chaos surrounding her, she makes two huge decisions: she will stop dating, and she will become vegan.

Easier said than done. She falls on and off the vegan wagon on a fairly regular basis, temped by tasty treats at the Truth or Dairy cafe. Her dog runs away again. Her classmates give her grief. Her brother sets his sights on her best friend. Courtney describes these and other melodramas in her diary, making for easy-to-follow laugh-out-loud stories.

I recommend Banana Splitsville (formerly titled Truth or Dairy) to fans of diary-format comedies, such as The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot and the Confessions of Georgia Nicolson series by Louise Rennison.

Courtney's freshman year of college is chronicled in the sequel, Rocky Road Trip (formerly titled Wurst Case Scenario), another diary-format story which is just as good if not better than the first!

Told in diary entries, BANANA SPLITSVILLE recounts the story of Courtney's senior year.

It isn't off to a great start -- her boyfriend, Dave, is going off to college and he just dumped her. Angry and jaded, Courtney makes a vow to be boyfriendless for the year. She instead focuses on other things, like running for Class Vice President and working at the Truth or Dairy. All while pining for Dave.

It's obvious that one of Dave's friends, Grant, is interested in more than just being pals with Courtney. Too bad she has that whole vow thing going on, because Grant is really cute!

In this romantic comedy by Catherine Clark, Courtney's character seemed a little vain to me and I had a hard time feeling empathetic toward her or her situation. Her flaws, however, became her one redeeming quality. And by the end of the novel she had started to grow on me.

While BANANA SPLITSVILLE had its humorous moments, I thought they were far and few between compared to PICTURE PERFECT. Overall, though, this was a fun, fast, and entertaining read. I would have liked to know more about Courtney's friends Beth and Jane; hopefully I will in the third book, ROCKY ROAD TRIP!

I bought this book for my daughter, and ended up reading it myself. The author has a quick wit and handles language well. Courtney is a engagingly vulnerable and very likable. Good stuff all around.
