Book Description

Bananas and plantains are major fruit crops in the tropics and subtropics and make a vital contribution to the economies of a number of countries. They are very important in the nutrition of local populations as well as tradeable commodities with large markets throughout the developed world. This book provides an accessible review of the scientific principles of banana production and relates these to field practices. Although the focus is on commercial cavendish banana production, plantains are also discussed where possible. The author also makes interesting comparisons between commercial banana production in the tropics and in the subtropics, where different climates necessitate different management. Overall, the book provides a concise but broad textbook, suitable for students and non-specialist research workers and professionals in horticulture, agronomy and food science.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A broad primary literature has been drawn upon, and a remarkable amount of information has been crammed into a small book. It is inexpensive enough to warrant being added to all libraries aspiring to have a few select yet authoritative books on plants of importance to humankind."--Quarterly Review of Biology

If your looking for a book on growing bananas, this is the only book you will need to buy. It covers everything from history to propagation. This is the third book on bananas that I have purchased and the only one I need.

5.0 out of 5 stars All Information About Bananas'Crop, November 8, 2011

This book is almost a bible of bananas. It has since its physiological structure, through its field management, pests and diseases until marketing. And best of all that is updated information.

4.0 out of 5 stars still a good book to learn about banana, November 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bananas and Plantains (Crop Production Science in Horticulture) (Paperback)
For its expensive price & small size, I wish the photos were in color rather than in black & white. However, it is still a fine book dedicated to banana science and cultivation management from A to Z.
