Editorial Reviews

The much-anticipated successor To All The Girls... (which became Willie's first Top 10 album in more than three decades when it was released in October 2013) Band of Brothers is the artist's first album of predominately new original material in nearly two decades, debuting the master tunesmith's first major batch of newly-penned songs since his Spirit album in 1996. "I got on kind of a writing kick," Willie Nelson said recently, "it's good to be writing again."

The influential songwriter--whose early successes brought pop and country together with unforgettable standards like "Crazy" (Patsy Cline), "Hello Walls" (Faron Young), "Funny How Time Slips Away" (Billy Walker), "Night Life" (Ray Price) and many others--has added nine new essential songs to his classic catalog. One of Willie's most personal albums to-date, the songs on Band of Brothers range from the introspective ("The Wall" and "Send Me a Picture") to the rollicking ("Wives and Girlfriends" and "Used To Her").

Rounding out the album are five songs, penned by others, which compliment and unite the album's sonic textures and lyric themes. Included are Willie's interpretations of Vince Gill's "Whenever You Come Around", Billy Joe Shaver's "The Git Go" (a duet with Jamey Johnson) and the appropriately-titled "Songwriter," written by Gordie Sampson and Bill Anderson.

It's hard to believe this is the first album in almost 20 years that features mainly newly written Willie Nelson songs. What's not hard to believe is that the result is well worth the wait. Willie's songs on "Band of Brothers" are kind of like an old friend, they might not have a whole lot of Earth-shattering surprises left in them but you're always better off for taking the time to lend your ear and listening to the stories. Here we get 14 brand new tracks and 9 new Willie penned tunes that he co-wrote with Buddy Cannon that show Willie can still write with the best of them.

Here's a track-by-track breakdown of the album:

Bring it On - This is a classic Willie Nelson song both in subject matter and sound. The lyrics shows he still has the outlaw attitude in him and the music rides Willie's signature riffs and Mickey Raphael's harmonica through familiar territory.

Guitar in the Corner - A song about writing songs where Willie talks about how it used to be quite a bit easier for him to write, going so far as to say the guitar played him when things were going well and how when that feeling leaves the guitar sits silent in the corner just waiting around for another song. Definitely autobiographical as Willie has said in recent interviews that he was just burned out on the writing process for years.

The Wall - This is one of my favorite tracks on the album and it has Willie looking inward with excellent results. No doubt another autobiographical song with Willie singing, "I took on more than I could handle / I bit off more than I could chew / I hit the wall / I went off like a Roman candle / Burning everyone I knew / I hit the wall.

Willie seems to record an album every 8 months. Throws them up against the wall to see if they stick. The last one I bought was the excellent "Spirit". And that was aways back.....Tight and excellent supporting musicians, most songs written by Willie and a co- writer, sings strong and as always clear and articulate, with a wide range of tunes worthy of repeated listening ( some with that Waylon beat)....I especially like the subtle and not over bearing harp playing, a sound that in the past has been too intrusive, and best of all as in his early recordings; the use of steel guitar. This one sticks....I give it a 5 in relation to current so called country music and perhaps a 4 in relation to his best....

Seemingly effortless and as comfortable as your favorite pair of old shoes, yet filled with the irony and wisdom befitting one so well traveled in this world. In my mind, Willie has only gotten better with time. Some say it's simple, formulaic, but it only appears to be as it is all formed by long, hard experience in the hands of a master. Bring It On, indeed, for one who has weathered so many storms and realizes that you either face them or drown. 'Guitar In the Corner', an excellent example of Willie's depth, when you substitute the object of any long term relationship and it's ups and downs, fading and rebirth, for his metaphoric guitar. The same with all of these pearls of wisdom. Substitute any occupation for 'songwriter' because we are all caught up in the commonalities of human existence. As to those who wish for written lyrics in a booklet, I would point out that unlike many other artists, the lyrics here are the not the frosting, but the cake itself and are presented clearly and concisely for the audience, no crib notes needed. That is Willie's genius and he's at the top of his game. I hope we both last long enough on this sea to experience more of the ever improving force that is Willie.

New classic Willie. He should keep writing, singing, and living forever. He should keep rolling out his unique view and sound of life. America loves Willie.

Well, I'm no Chet Flippo. All I can say is this is a great Willie album in my opinion. He's in good voice, does some good guitar work and he wrote 9 out of 14 songs. I'm totally amazed that this was the effort of an 81 year old. Band of Brothers has every bit the wit and energy of any classic Willie album. So don't bury him just yet. I'm sure there's more to come...

It is great to have these fresh songs from Willie, but it is hard to imagine any one of these being strong enough to get pulled from his long repertoire to play before many others. One of the good things about the music is that Willie's voice is placed right up front, unlike many albums these days where the singer is overwhelmed by the music. In this case, the music behind Willie is generally a mess. If it were not for the fact that Trigger is frequently featured as up-front as his voice, there would be little point in trying to find any of the background instruments to find its role and enjoy it.
"Bring It On" is fine, but "Guitar in the Corner" is the song that pulls one back to replay and replay. "Wives and Girlfriends" has gotten a lot of promotion and is entertaining, but not a five star song. "Songwriters" is good for the story it has to tell about the singers themselves, but "The Git Go" and several others should have been carefully reconsidered. It will take, as usual, several more plays to better evaluate the album, but I cannot imagine other singers wanting to play any of these on their own.
