Editorial Reviews

2009 two CD set from the Soul vocalist containing everything she released on the Invictus label including the albums Band Of Gold (1970), Contact (1971), Best Of (1972) and Reaching Out (1973). This set includes the worldwide #1 hit 'Band Of Gold' as well as plenty of other Pop and R&B gems. All these albums have been unavailable for many years and never together in one package. Edsel.

The last album here is perhaps the weakest of the three original albums, but it is definitely worth a listen.

Her style is impeccable and absolutely flawless.

With better luck, Freda Payne might have had a much longer period in the spotlight. As it is, most people only remember her for Band of gold. This compilation makes a serious attempt to show that there is much more to Freda's music than just that hit. I already knew that, having bought a single CD many years ago, which I reviewed in 2002. Actually, that compilation contained 24 of the 40 tracks to be found here, but at the price Amazon were offering it for, I decided this set was irresistible. It contains all the tracks from the three original albums that Freda recorded for Invictus, together with tracks that appeared on her Best of compilation but not on the other albums, plus alternative versions of Band of gold and Deeper and deeper. The liner notes say that this set contains everything that Freda recorded for Invictus, which may well be so (if one doesn't count the US single version of You brought me joy, released in Japan on Unhooked Generation: The Complete Invictus Recordings, which otherwise contains everything here but in a different running order), though it would mean that there are no previously unreleased tracks hiding in the vaults.

The first album, inevitably titled Band of gold, includes the minor R+B hit Unhooked generation, which was the single before the big one, as well as Deeper and deeper, the follow-up to the big one. Other great tracks include The world don't owe you a thing, Through the memory of my mind and Rock me in the cradle among others. In my earlier review, I wrote that there were no cover versions as far as I could tell, and that remains the case for those 24 tracks, but there are a few covers here, though not ones that I would have expected.

The last reviewer told you all you need to know, but I love this CD. This compilation of albums covers much of Freda Payne's work on the Invictus label

This does not quite havethe exuberance of Honey Cone, but rests on the same thread between soul, funk and melodic pop. Payne has a powerful but restrained voice, and the music is lushly orchestrated but always graceful, never sappy, and sometimes funky.

You will never be sorry for getting this. Like a butterscoth Lifesaver, a few tracks a day will be sweet and satisfying.

Holland-Dozier-Holland were fantastic producers and really new how to showcase talent. Freda Payne, who I have had the pleasure of seeing in concert, really shines on this set. All of her classic Invictus recordings are included with terrific packaging. The sound quality is superb and the mixes are exactly as they appeared on vinyl. This is a must for Freda Payne fans and R&B collectors alike. Not only is Freda Payne still as beautiful as ever, she really has the pipes. Her style is impeccable and absolutely flawless.

Disc One (Band of Gold/Contact) is like sparkling champagne. The songwriting, production, arranging, and sound engineering is outstanding. I don't remember my long gone vinyl copies sounding this good. The clarity achieved on these recordings is exceptional for 1969/1970/1971. Post Motown Holland-Dozier-Holland began with a bang, as Freda Payne bursts forth with class and elegance! Disc Two (The Best of Freda Payne/Reaching Out) is like sweet tea. The songwriting, production, arranging, and sound engineering makes me think that no one really cared to match or exceed the quality of the first two albums. "The Best of Freda Payne" according to whose ears? Maybe H-D-H were "Reaching Out" for what they had on "Band of Gold/Contact"? Anyway, selections eight through thirteen deserve a listen. Especially "The Man Of My Dreams" and "Mother Misery's Favourite Child" which had hit potential. I was between giving 4 stars or 5 stars as a rating. The detailed, comprehensive 24 page booklet alone rates 5 stars. Freda Payne's story, the stories behind the recordings, H-D-H's split from Motown, and Dozier's split from the Holland Brothers are informative as well as interesting.
