Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Band of the Hand was executive-produced by Miami Vice creator Michael Mann, but this violent relic of the '80s begs for a smarter script and Mann's directorial flair. Instead it's got TV's "Starsky"--Paul Michael Glaser--seemingly asleep at the wheel, barely controlling a rainbow coalition of bad actors as punky Florida jailbirds, given a second chance when they're dropped into the treacherous everglades and whipped into a crack unit of urban warriors by a gruff marine (Stephen Lang) who supervises their juvenile "reform." One of the reluctant recruits has a girlfriend (fresh-faced newcomer Lauren Holly) who's tied up with local drug lords (Larry Fishburne, James Remar), and the inevitable showdown offers guerilla warfare in pastel shades. Wretched dialogue and lackluster action don't stop this from being a Vice-like guilty pleasure, populated by garishly costumed stereotypes and ending like the pilot for a TV series that never happened. Even the DVD liner notes admit the movie is "infamous"; accepted on those terms, it's a hoot. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

Welcome to the jungle — Miami-style — where fast cars, dirty deals, hot women, and acid-washed jeans all come with the turf. Producer Michael Mann (Ali, The Insider) delivers an action-packed dose of high-octane fun in this infamous 1980s crime thriller, BAND OF THE HAND. Directed by Paul Michael Glaser (TV’s “Starsky & Hutch”), the cast features awesome performances by future stars Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix), Lauren Holly (What Women Want), Leon (Above the Rim), James Remar (TV’s “Sex and the City”), and John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch). The killer retro soundtrack features the title track performed by Bob Dylan backed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. While serving time in a grueling rehab program in Florida's Everglades, five young felons form an unlikely bond. When they return to Miami’s dangerous ghetto, the former criminals wage a lethal war on the drug kingpins who rule the underworld of murder and mayhem. BAND OF THE HAND goes for the jugular, never once

Very period piece and great premise.

This is one of the most awesome 80's movies; especially if you "came of age" during that Miami Vice time.

I looked at the movie and shows the best quality in picture and sound.

This movie was great. I laughed all the way through it. The acting was passionate and heartfelt, not to mention the awesome soundtrack! I love to watch this movie! If anyone should know how I can get a CD Version of the soundtrack, please e mail me. The actor who playes Nestor, James Remar, is great! Where has he been since? He was wonderful in Miami Vice also.

So long.....I have waited so long for this movie to be released on DVD. Last year, I was forced to buy a well used and badly warn VHS copy on Ebay. Forced, you say? Yes, Forced. This movie is goodness. That's all there is to it. I saw it on cable when I was a kid and it quickly became one of my favorite movies of all time.
Please, do yourself a favor and buy this movie. As some people have said above, they really do not make them like this anymore. It's got that special something that modern movies lack...and I'm not just saying that because I'm older now, and that's what older people are supposed to say about things from their chldhood. It's a fact. My praises cannot do this movie justice. You have to watch it to understand. Band of the Hand is hidden and forgotten treasure. Those who call it corny, or say the acting is "bad" simply do not get it. I get it, and I hope you do too.

This would be my all time favorite movie. I first saw it when I was 16 and watch it whenever I get the chance. It has a nice Miami Vice feel to it and I always get a kick out of Lawrence Fishburn's hair cut. This movie truly defines what should be done to keep out of control youth in line. It is a shame that this movie didn't get the exposure or credit it deserved, it has a great cast and a fantastic story line. I even bought the soundtrack on cassette. < I probably need help..lol. Own this movie in your collection, you won't be dissappointed.

This movie bears several marks of its '80's roots--the clothes, the lifestyles, the hair, certainly; but more importantly, this is a film with the optimism and faith in humanity that got swept away in the cynicism of the '90's. Band of the Hand is a sophisticated character study with an eye toward the building of self-esteem and loyalty.

Classic line in a great film. My family loves it, and we have been searching for it for years. Videoflicks.com sells it but they're previously viewed, and we want new. If you find or hear anything, please let me know.

This was one of the zeitgeist movies of the 80s. Most everyone in West Bloomfield and Birmingham, Michigan were trying to don the Miami Vice look. I still remember seeing this for the first time at 12 Oaks mall theater as a high schooler. Stephen Lang is a very flexible actor and we are introduced to Larry Fishburn (besides Apocolypse Now). Very period piece and great premise.

PS a few months ago, the only way to get this DVD was through private sellers on Amazon who wanted $100+ dollars for it! Well now its for sale for a real price! Screw you, greedy s.o.b.s!!

Let me start by saying I love this movie. I first saw this film in the theatres during it's original theatrical release. I have this film on vhs. I have been waiting for the past few years for this film to be released on DVD. Finally it has arrived. I wish they had preserved the original theatrical aspect (widescreen), but at least they remastered the audio and video. The film itself stands as one of the best and most entertaining action films of the 1980's. This largely overlooked classic embodies the look, the feel and the attitude of 80's cool and features the most memorable soundtrack of this era. The story centers around a group of juvenile delinquents who have committed serious crimes and are given one last chance at rehabilitation.
This last ditch effort begins in the Florida Everglades and culminates in the "program" relocating to Miami. Once in Miami the ever reforming juveniles have to learn to work together, resist the temptation of their former lives and also confront the harsh realities of their past. Each character undergoes personal growth and ultimately they decide on their own to wage war on the local ... cartel and the action really heats up. I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes action movies with humor and substance. Band of the Hand has excitement and flair to spare, considerably more than the standard fare.

This is one of the most awesome 80's movies; especially if you "came of age" during that Miami Vice time. The review by Leonard Maltin once more confirms that he needs to take a long walk off a short pier! Oh yeah- the soundtrack is fabulous.
