4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive history with all your favorites July 11, 2001
Format:Audio CD
I don't know if the Smithsonian is always this good with their collections, but if you're looking for history, they've done it right here. I grew up listening to Big Band pieces from the late 30s & early 40s - songs my Dad jitterbugged to as a teen. But there's a lot more. From the thin sounding beginnings in the 20s to the overlush sounds of the 50s - this collection covers it all. Of course, I find that I listen to the middle cuts the most - all the familiar favorites. But put the whole set on for an afternoon, and you'll travel through musical history. The more than 50-page guide (in big old LP format - my first copy) is comprehensive & full of great tidbits. A must for any swing enthusiast.

This album has some GREAT big band! From the 20s all the way to the 50s, you slowly work your way though each decade. The quality of the recordings is also great.

This is an amazing collection of original music from the era of big band jazz. It is fun to listen to in order to track the progress and change of the genre. There is a great booklet explaining all the music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dad's favorites August 24, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I found these as Cassette Tapes when I was going through my dad's stuff when he passed. One was missing, and the others had been listened to so much, they had degraded.
The CD's are great. Memories of my dad live on, partially with this music!
