Editorial Reviews

From the Author

I am just honored to be here. Every day I look at the wonder that has become my life, and I thank God for the blessings that I have. The Band may not be a perfect novel -- far from it -- but it stands as one of those achievements in my life that maybe only matters to me, but it matters a whole lot. As rough as it is, I know where I was when I began this novel and I know where I was when I finished it. And in between I underwent the greatest mental and spiritual transformation of my life. The Band contains that change. For all of its flaws, it contains that period of my life.

About the Author

Stacey Cochran was born and grew up in the Carolinas. At twenty-seven, he packed everything he owned into a pickup truck and a U-Haul trailer, and he drove 2,370 miles across the country to Oracle, Arizona in order to write fiction full time. His books include The Band and The Kiribati Test. He lives near Phoenix with his wife and two dogs.

1.0 out of 5 stars A miss of measure incalculable, April 22, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Band (Paperback)
Whether it be the teenage-mindset, the actuality of the musician's life, or linguistic skill, you need not worry about encountering any of the aforementioned within the margins of "The Band." Cochran, in an email, pushed this book upon me and I took a chance. I'd expect this chance was on-par with buying a lottery ticket, as the chances of my enjoying this ``book'' must have been similar to those of getting a winning ticket. If you're looking for something of the male-teenage-experience, dive into works by those that Cochran, previously, compared himself to: Eggers and Wallace. "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" does a fantastic job of displaying the male ego and, simultaneously, insecurities, while "Infinite Jest," is a superbly enjoyable novel that, at times, does a fantastic job delving the depths of its protagonists' psyche. Basically, whatever you do, spend some money at amazon.com, just don't spend it on this tripe.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disconnected, July 11, 2010

Blisterman (Fallbrook, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Band (Paperback)
There is about nothing in this 'story' that truly connects to any teenage reality...except as a shallow, one-dimensional cliche. The sad part is that this writer hasn't improved over the years; in fact, in many ways his writing just gets flatter and emptier. Regardless of the author's claims, I have read this book.
