5.0 out of 5 stars Should Be Required Reading for Preops! December 10, 2010
By Betsy
Format:Paperback
This book is outstanding; it really should be required reading for preops. I am going to have a copy sent to my surgeon; he will love it.

As an RN and educational writer (as well as a Realize gastric band patient), I think the way the book is constructed is brilliant. I love that there are clear objectives for each section---each of which is met by the content. The interactive nature of the book--there are plenty of exercises for prospective patients to complete, as they work to determine whether banding is the weight loss solution they are seeking--makes the book really stand apart from the competition. Also worth noting is that the illustrations show realistic bodies, and there are many inspirational vignettes provided by gastric band patients at varying points in their post-banding weight loss journeys. These before-and-afters, interspersed among the informative text, are inspirational. They show real-life patients at various stages, offering the reader a realistic view of what to expect.

From an RN and writer standpoint, I know that writing health education materials for adults is tricky; reading levels vary so much and everyone approaches surgery from a different starting point. When you also consider that obesity is a hot-button topic, with emotions frequently clouding perceptions, the task of writing a book that truly prepares prospective patients for what lies ahead becomes even more difficult.

The authors fully accomplish what they set out to do with this book. The writing is thoroughly accessible. It's not over anyone's head, but it's never condescending, either. By the time the reader--any reader--finishes this book, s/he will have a realistic understanding what to expect during the preoperative and perioperative periods, as well as long-term. Those who choose to have gastric banding surgery will enter the operating room armed with everything they require in order to be successful postoperatively. (Included in this is an extensive, extensive list of other helpful resources.)

Seriously, it is the best book available on the topic. It's very different from others on the market--both in format and in quality of information provided. EXCELLENT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource! December 17, 2010
By Chaz M.
Format:Paperback
This is an outstanding resource...chocked full of good reliable information on Gastric Banding from people who really know what they are talking about about. They have walked the walk and talked the talk. I think it should be required reading for anyone who is considering Gastric Banding...or who has already had Gastric Banding. Even if you have been banded for some time there is information that is very valuable to help optomize your weight loss as we as get back on track if you need to. I highly recommend this book!

This book is a wonderful resource for it is educational and informative on what Lap Band surgery is and isn't.

For any person considering this surgery it is a must read for them, as well as family members and supportive friends.

The book is an excellent read because it was written from first hand experiences. The authors are also patients with an empathic desire to help others find a solution to the crippling effects of obesity. The book is honest with an interactive, hands on approach for the reader to determine if banded living is for them.

It is a breath of fresh air to have someone who is willing to share their wisdom, strength and hope for others who have dieted and failed, yet seek a way out from the pains of this disease.

Best,

Patty Bourdon, M.A., M.F.T.
