Gunpla enthusiasts tend to suggest that beginners start out with High Grade kits, rather than the Real Grade line (which this kit falls under), but this was only my second model ever, and I can say with confidence that I had no trouble building it. While there are quite a few pieces, the instructions are easy to follow, even if you don't understand Japanese. Furthermore, the pieces all snap together, so there is no need for glue (or paint for that matter - the pieces are all colored appropriately).

And how about the finished product? If you read up on the Real Grade line, you will learn that it is meant to be something of a hybrid of Bandai's other model kit grades. It has the small size and (relative) cheap price of the High Grade, a high piece count (inspired by the Perfect Grade), and a flexible joint system (taken from the Master Grade). In practice, the Real Grade kits wind up being incredibly detailed and highly poseable. The Gundam in particular comes with quite a few bells and whistles. It has all of its key weapons (beam rifle, bazooka, shield and beam sabers), as well as a separate Core Fighter model which can be used to assemble the Gundam's torso (just like in the original TV show). This level detail was unexpected, but wholly welcome, in such a well priced kit.

All in all, I think that anyone new to this hobby would do fine with a Real Grade kit such as this one, and due to the extra level of detail, I'd probably recommend them over a High Grade kit. The bit of extra effort is worth it when you see the finished product.

This is a really cool model and given that it is 1/144 scale, it is incredibly intricate. I think the biggest problem with this kit is that when trying to articulate/pose it, there are some problems with the skirt armor and arms staying attached. Also, some of the later Real Grade models seem to have more robust inner frames. Still, this was my first (and is the first) Real Grade model and I am still satisfied with it, even after 5 more Real Grade models.

The Real Grade series is certainly interesting. I picked this kit up as a hobbyist who has put together about 10 or so high grade kits before this.

Real Grade is supposed to be Master Grade detail in the size of a High Grade (1/144 scale). The kit is certainly incredibly detailed, and comes with various decals/stickers that actually make the model look good, unlike stickers in most High Grade kits. You will find yourself working for quite awhile just to put a leg or an arm together, which is a refreshing pleasure to a Gundam modelist; especially someone who is used to High Grade kits. When completed the kit is certainly beautiful, even without paint. It can be posed in a surprising variety of ways with tiny complexities in how each joint works (I noticed one when working on the knees)

Now, after all this, there is a bit of a problem with some of the real grade kits. They are composed of alot of parts which on it's own isn't a problem, but because of their small size each part interconnects in a large variety of ways. Because of this, its easy for parts to just fall off after the kit is completed. I haven't had any break, but the feet in particular will come apart if I try to pose it and I have to keep sticking the armor pads back on, then an entirely different part will fall off. A tiny bit of plastic-safe glue should fix this, but it is something I noticed.

Regardless, given the price range of the real grade kits they are certainly worth picking up if you're into Gundam Modeling, or even if you want to get started. I like this kit in particular because it is the original RX-78, and kind of pays tribute to the history of gundam as a whole.

Enjoy!

I've only built 144 sized kits and had been planning on going only rg instead of hg, but probably going to get too many in the future. It looks really nice standing, but the inner frame is really loose. The parts I am really unhappy with are the legs, feet. These happen to be the things that hold up this gundam and as a result, posing is much harder. With the hgs, the units do not move after you have set them, but with this, I have to do much more to make it stand reasonably stably. The legs and feet feel really loose and the feet need to be flat. If the unit is even a little leaning to the front or back, the unit may fall over. (as the feet will bend in the three sections into a more circularly) Even if I had gotten an action base, the stomach is also pretty lose and when I hold unit in the air at an angle, the legs will cause the stomach to move.

The beam rifle and mega bazooka uses a flipping out mechanism in order to secure to the hand, but because it is a little bigger than the hole, it will not always go in (swinging up and down), the fingers may also pop off.

Parts fall off very easily, mainly the front and back skirt, shoulder parts and boosters. The flaws of the inner frame is that every time a part pops off a joint, there is a chance that it will ruin the connection (as it is popped out and forced in again). Over time, that part will fall off more frequently as the joint gets looser. Other parts that you may need to be careful about are also the pointing figure if you plan on using beam rifle.

Overall, the kit was pretty easy to build, and the end result does look nice and detailed but I really don't look forward to moving/posing the unit as it feels loose.
