Book Description

August 1, 2007
Employing a unique combination of psychology, philosophy, sociology, and dog training theory, Vicki Hearne recounts her experiences with Bandit, a dog deemed so dangerous that the state of Connecticut condemned him to death. Hearne rescued Bandit and was soon entrenched in a legal battle that extended well beyond his case as she fought to prove that no dog is inherently vicious. She quickly discovered the factors that contributed to Bandit’s behavior and set about releasing the essentially “good dog” that lay within.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Simply one of the most perceptive works about the social contracts between humans and animals ever written.” –Kirkus Reviews
Bandit is not only a dog story, but also a deeply eccentric lesson in justice, linguistics, racism and teleology.” –New York Times

3.0 out of 5 stars Less the story of a dog - more the author's philosophy, January 30, 2010

This review is from: Bandit: The Heart-Warming True Story of One Dog's Rescue from Death Row (Paperback)
This book was more the philosophy & opinions of the author than a "Heartwarming True Story of One Dog's Rescue from Death Row". Between a few thought provoking points on the nature of dogs & their relationships with humans, were disparaging opinions of HSUS, rescue groups, police, etc. At times, a sprinkling of thinly veiled accusations of wrong doing are included. This reader was disappointed to be left with the opinion Bandit's rescue from death row had more to do with the author proving herself right and providing another forum for her philosophies than it did with saving Bandit's life.

2.0 out of 5 stars Tough to follow, January 25, 2010

This review is from: Bandit: The Heart-Warming True Story of One Dog's Rescue from Death Row (Paperback)
I don't know if it's a good story or not because I couldn't keep up with the way she writes. The author seems to write as she thinks, and it was just hard to make sense of it all. I may pick it up to try again another time, but it was like reading a kaleidascope. I am disappointed though because I'd really like to know Bandit's story.
