Review

The Bandit Joaquin is a tale of retaliation, determination and success. Joaquin Murieta was a scrawny teenager barely strong enough to dig a grave for his family when he was orphaned and forced to fend for himself in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in central California. This was a time and place where everyone with his skin color was considered a "no-good Mexican" who could be unfairly taxed, run off their land, and exterminated without fear of punishment. Don Gwaltney has composed a moving journey through the halcyon days of the California Gold Rush in a wild and woolly American West. The Bandit Joaquin is actually based on impeccable research resulting in an accurate background to this high-adventure tale. Every detail is authentic and appropriate, enhancing the reader's enjoyment. The Bandit Joaquin is the stuff of which legends (and Hollywood movies) are made. -- Midwest Book Review --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars great read, November 16, 2000

This book is a delight. It would make a great movie. I started it yesterday and couldn't put it down until I finished it -- at three o'clock this morning.

5.0 out of 5 stars history never read so well, November 16, 2000
By A Customer
This was a very exciting time on the planet, a time of discovery. Gwaltney takes on an exciting journey through the eyes of a disadvantaged, rebellious and talented minority who rises from obscurity to grab his rightful share of riches. A story well told by a masterful writer.

2.0 out of 5 stars Excuse me, but Joaquin was a blond..., April 11, 1999
If the Midwest Review reports that Murrieta received prejudice because of his color--and they got that info from the book, then there's something wrong with that "impeccable research," as Frank F. Latta has documented thoroughly that Joaquin was a tall, light-eyed, light haired blond called "Huero." He came from a very large and fairly well off family from a town in Sonora. Okay, okay, I'll read it and get back to you!
