This book was recommended to me when I was looking for a compilation of songs from the 30s and 40s, and I'm really happy with it. The best feature, from my point of view as a performer, is that there's an informative description (often a page to a page and a half) about each song -- telling information about the composers, the singers who made it famous, etc. It's the kind of info that can help us give the song meaning, for ourselves and our audiences. Great compilation of favorites of the WWII generation!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest...of the Great American Songbook, December 26, 2009

I'm of an age--he said creakily--to remember most of these being played regularly; so they're imprinted in that wonderful archive between the ears.
I play guitar and keyboard...and wanted a collection on these jewels that I can grab quickly. It's
got great lead sheets, great pix and background writing.
If you like big band, swing and some of the greatest lyrics of all time--this is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars delightful book!, June 8, 2011

Large enough print to read the music easily, piano and vocal and chord names, songs are familiar ones I rarely hear anymore, range from B to F but rarely more than about an octave for any one song, each song introduced with a brief page about it's history and a photo of a famous big band musician or composer or band. Glad I bought it!
