This review is from: Bane of Lord Caladon (Mass Market Paperback)
In essence this an appealing story that concerns a quest, a curse, a dragon, a very wicked witch and an enchanted jewel.
Distant ancestors of the current Lord Caladon robbed the dragon Thudredid of his prized jewel, Dylcaer. Subsequently pirates in the employ of the witch Queen Urganni stole the jewel from Caladon. Thudredid now occupies the ancestral Caladon castle and will only leave if the jewel Dylcaer is returned to him. Most of the book is taken up by the quest to obtain the jewel and return it to the dragon and be done with it and with him.
Author Mills for the most part steer clear of florid descriptions of magical shenanigans. His clear descriptions of the expedition through forest, over mountains and across the sea enliven the text with a believable spirit of adventure.
The usual fantasy twaddle of magical amulets, ancient towers and kindly wizards are factored in to keep the plot well within fantasy sphere.
Published in 1982 "The Bane of Lord Caladon" by Craig Mills, while hardly original in themes or plot ideas is, nonetheless, a very entertaining fantasy story. The book is almost unique in that there are no sequels or prequels. A fact that pleases this reader no end.
