About the Artist

Fania Records was founded in 1964 by Italian-American Jerry Masucci and multi-talented musician Johnny Pacheco. Fania holds a legendary spot in the history of Latin music, and its catalog includes landmark recordings that have marked and defined the history of Latin music. During its heyday in the 1970s, Fania's roster included virtually every luminary of the genre, among them Johnny Pacheco, Willie Colon, Ruben Blades, Hector Lavoe Celia Cruz, Larry Harlow, and Eddie Palmieri. In addition, the label also created the fabled Fania All-Stars, a kind of all star super band that took salsa music to the world.

Thirty original Fania productions will be available for purchase this March 2006. Each tune has been re-mastered from its original mixed tape and has been re-packaged with extensive liner notes. All productions will feature the original cover designs as well as additional pictures and images. Since the days the Fania originals were recorded, analog and digital technology has greatly improved. Today's mastering engineers can bring out musicality with great detail and in a way that was unachievable in the past. Relive the magic of salsa by adding these newly restored classics to your collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a party record!!! Get it!!!, July 20, 2008
This is such a fun record! It spawned many hits of the era. It's a mix of vibe based boogaloo, soul, and tipico beats. It's essential and guaranteed to make you wanna dance.
As for the reissue itself, it's pretty good. It's got the original artwork and it's remastered. However, I feel like I'm nitpicking here, but in some tracks there is a slight fade out and/or wobble. I guess the master tape may be damaged. I listened closely to earlier editions of this record, both on cd and LP and that problem is not present.
Also, it's too bad that the LP warmth and ambiance has not transfered well into this cd. It sounds a bit too compressed. This info is just for the collector.

If you just want the music, you have nothing to worry about. Great album!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great find!, April 27, 2009
I've had quite a difficutly locating any of the songs off these albums online and was thrilled to find the whole CD here. As a salsera, living in NYC and visiting Miami often, I hear Joe Cuba Sextet sparingly and wanted to include it in my collection. And I'm thrilled that I did! It's wonderful to pop in for any party or even for background music. Some songs are more 'American' in their English usage and jazz inflection, while some are total pre-cursor to Salsa, with more of a Mambo feel. But still it's pure Latin Bugaloo, which is in a class of its own! Anyone who loves any sort of Latin music must own!

5.0 out of 5 stars good-time music that makes me smile, February 20, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
When I was in college back in the 1960s, I knew a guy from Panama who had this album. The cheerful lyrics and sound and Latin percussion always boosted my spirits, and I often thought about this album, never imagining that I would ever hear it again. What a pleasant surprise to see it in compact disc form! I listen to it every few weeks while I am getting ready for work in the morning, and it always makes me smile. The musicians and backup singers were obviously having a very good time when they recorded the songs.
