First of all, my 8 year old daughter (on a traveling team) loves this mask. It fits securely and doesn't obscure her vision like many of the other guards do. Also, it has heightened her confidence the past year which has been great for her development. As a father that has been active in coaching and trainer her, I saw marked improvement in her development after using the mask. Even if you do not buy this mask, GET A MASK for your younger daughter! They provide excellent protection and aid in the confidence and development of your child in softball.

Now, one may ask if this product is as good as other full face guards? Here are my thoughts ... The mask is a modified lacrosse eye guard. It primarily protects the forehead, eyes, nose and cheek areas, so it has some practical limitations. I believe that this product is good for two types of younger players. One, for the beginning 5 and 6 year old. At this age, girls are just beginning and most will not face other players that hit hard enough for a ball to come up from the ground and threaten the mouth/chin area. It will help with catching and fielding confidence, and thus, increase skills in learning the fundamentals fielding without obstructing the player's vision. Second, I reoommend this mask for the more advanced player at a bit older ages. The overall field of view provided by this mask cannot be mentioned enough. There are really no obstructions, but it still provides very good overall face protection.

So, if your child is at an age where other kids are hitting hard and he/she is limited in skills or experience, you might want to consider a full face guard that fully protects the top of the head and chin/mouth. But, with that caveat, I have been very please with this product for my daughter and will be getting two more for my younger daughters that are just starting softball this year. Remember though, if you don't get this mask ... GET A MASK! It is worth it!

We bought this for my 9 yr old boy to protect his nose post surgery. He likes this style MUCH better than the full face clear plastic one he had before this one. It is a little big on him but I expected that. It still does the job.
