I first purchased this tape back in '90 and it inspired me to change my musical direction. I have long since worn out that tape. When I took a banjo workshop from Bob recently, he had this CD offered for sale with nine additional tunes and I haven't stopped listening to it since! His banjo playing and the fiddling of some other excellent musicians on this CD are as good as it gets! I especially appreciate the fact that all the banjo and fiddle tunings are listed as well as the source for the tune. Thanks Bob!! I recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys playing or listening to old-time fiddle and banjo music.

One of the very best old time albums. I first came across this recording at the Appalachian State library in Boone, NC; the vinyl was transferred to cassette. I made my own copy and like the previous reviewer, wore it out. I now have the cd.

The fourth track, "Ora Lee" is without question the most beautiful fiddle track I've ever heard. This is the only known recording of this tune and inspired me to pick up the fiddle. Although Carlin is best known as a banjo player, this is a fiddle dominated record, the banjo is merely background.

My only misgivings: the extra tracks sandwiched in the middle (noted with #). This is such a fine recording because Carlin's group recorded two dozen songs and kept only the best. The bonus tracks are inferior and belong at the very end.

Altogether, the rarest of recordings that demonstate the finest imprint of the southern soul. If this music doesn't move you, check your switch.

I like my clawhammer banjo music with some vocals. That's why I really wanted "Fiddle Tunes for the Clawhammer Banjo" by Carlin, but it's out of print. Thirty tunes of banjo and fiddle start to sound the same and gets a little boring.
