How to banish your fear of flying by understanding your airplane. With advisories from the FAA. A Passenger Handbook.

Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

Chapter 1. It's Reasonable To Start Out Afraid. Your airplane is a big metal box. They lock you in. It makes strange noises which suggest that you are in trouble. There is nothing you can see which keeps it from falling out of the sky. You know there are engines but you see nothing which keeps the airplane moving forward. It sometimes tips from side to side. There are no signs to show which way it should go so you will not get lost. It sometimes bumps up and down. When it does land it bumps and makes a noise. They make you wear seat belts. Why? Is there a reason they do not tell you? Before you get on, your hand luggage is passed through a masked tunnel and you must walk through a peculiar doorway while a guard stares at you. A few times each year the newspapers and TV scream about a hideous, horrible crash or hijacking. Those flight attendants keep smiling reassuringly, but they get paid to do that.

If all this doesn't scare you, there is something wrong with you.

But if you understood all these scary things; if they are no longer shocks out of a horror movie; if you actually knew what makes airplanes tick and why flying really is the safest, and often the most beautiful, way to go long distances, then you would have a happy trip instead of an ordeal.

This book will make you understand.

On the other hand, suppose you read the book, understand the unknown, know the safety of flying, and you're still afraid? Are you an irrational pariah who should be shrugged off? No way! There are thousands like you; Chapter 12 is written just for you; and it will help you to eliminate the purely emotional basis of your fear of flying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reassured by An Expert, February 6, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Banish Fear Of Flying (Paperback)
In his book, Lawrence Kamm, an electro-mechanical engineer, tells us "If you want the benefits of travel the odds are so much more favorable for air than for car that it is the obvious choice, and those odds are so immensely favorable that you can look forward to your trip as one of the safest episodes in your life." These are very reassuring words! I mostly enjoyed this book because it is written by someone who really understands planes and the physics of flight. Kamm explains that every system on an airplane has not only a backup, but a backup for the backup. If you want to learn all about the mechnics of flight, in layman's terms, and be thoroughly ensured that flying is by far the most safe form of transport in the world, then this book is for you. And to top it all off, the book has a very friendly "tone" and is quite fun and entertaining to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Banish the Fear of Flying, November 24, 2000

Ralph Peterson (San Diego, Ca USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Banish Fear Of Flying (Paperback)
Larry Kamm accomplishes his mission of banishing the fear of flying by explaining why planes do what they do, using understandable and entertaining examples. In fact, he tells you everything but why wing walkers are able to remain upright on top a speeding plane. His book also analyses and clarifies all procedures involved in flying before you leave the ground, your rights and obligations as a passenger and what to do when you are not satisfied with airline service. Buy and read this amazing book and you too will be reassured that you are safer in the air then on the ground. Be prepared and fly smart.

1.0 out of 5 stars not worth the price., August 9, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Banish Fear Of Flying (Paperback)
This product was a disapointment for me. I found the writing style confusing and unprofessional. More than half of the info in the book is taken directly from the FAA. I could have found this info on my own probably for free on the internet. The book itself is a photocopied booklet, physically not what I expected for the price.
