Comment: The album cover shows a light amount of wear and my best guess on the condition of the vinyl would me an M-/EX grade. Most orders ship within 24 hours of purchase.

Editorial Reviews

Banish Misfortune is a rare example of a couple of fellows who are U.S. born yet manage to re-create an ethnic music (Irish, in this case) without any pretension or condescension, simply by playing in an honest and strong manner. They work through a number of traditional pieces as well as several scattered original compositions and perform them with heartfelt grace and gleeful straightforwardness, never grandstanding or "overdoing" the Irishness. Dalglish's hammered dulcimer work is light and shimmering, retaining a strong rhythmic pulse without any machine-like qualities while Larsen, on a wide range of instruments, compliments his partner superbly and shines on some features for flute and tin whistle. Dalglish would go on to achieve some degree of notoriety in more new agey circles, but this early recording captures him before any treacle or gauziness had set in.

This album is a true classic. This is a must-have album for lovers of celtic, instrumental, and hammer dulcimer music. With me, as for many early fans, this was the album that introduced me to celtic music.
Often labeled as "new age" because "Banish Misfortune" is instrumental, it is a forerunner of that genre. This music is not synthesized or electronic, but instead consists of virtuoso performances of traditional Irish tunes. While this album is melodic, it is not especially mellow. Most of these are dance tunes, and as such are played at dizzying, tempos that inspire one to motion more than to meditation. Highly recommended!

This album inspired me to learn 3 instruments: the tin whistle, the guitar, and the hammered dulcimer. I have never heard a dulcimer recording its equal. It will make you want to learn an instrument just so you can share the songs with other people. I would get this record if at all possible

I bought this album in vinyl way back when (when people still bought vinyl). I don't know why, but it has been an inspiration to my music since. I still listen to it often in my car on a cassette I made from it back around, oh, 1980 or so, and can't get enough. I also saw Dalglish and Larsen in concert near Providence RI in the mid-1980s, and it was great. I wonder what they're up to today?

A friend posted a query on Facebook asking what music best defines our past & our life journey. With barely any hesitation, I knew that for me, it was this album! My parents had this and 'First of Autumn' in circulation at their craft store in Kentucky in the mid-70's & it has been one of my favorites ever since. I listen to it regularly even though I can hear practically every note in my head by now. It's beautiful, timeless music. I most highly recommend this collection of songs!

Banish Misfortune was one my first purchases of traditional music albums when I lived in the Chapel Hill area in the early 1980's. Dalglish and Larsen played there and I saw them live whenever I could. There is something about this album that never grows old. I still have the LP, though the album is so worn, it's hard to get a phono needle to track it properly. What more can one say?

My wife and I recorded this album from radio onto cassette in the late seventies, never knowing the artist or album name. That cassette died long ago. After some search we were able to identify both artists and album and were extremely excited to be able to purchase it from Amazon. After receiving it we absolutely loved listening to it again. Thank you.
