Review

“A great off-beat debut novel with a likeable heroine and a fun, original storyline.” (Karen Chance, New York Times bestselling author)

Kindling the Moon rocks like AC/DC on Saturday night. This book has it all: great writing, action, romance, a strong heroine, a unique hero, and the best teenager ever. I can’t wait for the next one.” (Ann Aguirre, national bestselling author)

Kindling the Moon engaged me from page one. I loved it! I immediately adored the heroine, Arcadia Bell. This book is packed from cover to cover with unpredictable twists, heart-pounding action, and heated sexual tension." (Anya Bast, New York Times bestselling author)

“Debut author Jenn Bennett takes the familiar ideas of magic, demons, and mythology, and she gives us something sexy, fun, and genuinely unique in Kindling the Moon. Arcadia Bell is a sassy, whip-smart addition to the growing pantheon of urban fantasy heroines, and Bennett an author to watch!”
(Kelly Meding, author of Three Days to Dead)

"Bennett quickly establishes that her terrific debut was no fluke, delivering another riveting tale featuring gutsy renegade magician Cady Bell. Bennett does a stellar job blending character development with plenty of supernatural mystery and peril. A series for your keeper shelf!" (Romantic Times Magazine, Top Pick)

"Jenn Bennett has created another amazing novel filled with strong characters, magical surprises, and quirky humor." (Tynga's Reviews)

I have to say I fell in love with this series and I am so sad to see it end but the author takes it out on top and ties up all the loose ends so I am ok with having to say bye to it. We get back into the series by finding Cady and Lon picking up the pieces after the ending that pretty much tore me apart and left me with a hole in my heart. I love Cady more and more though because with all that happened to her she is so strong and resolved to not let it get her down. She is a true fighter and the love between her and Lon makes it all a little bit easier for her to handle because she has him to lean on. As we get more into the story we learn that Cady is racing aganist the clock to find out how she was conceived to take down her murderous mother. I have to say I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what her mom was so ruthless and cold blooded towards her own child. As we get more into the story there is something that takes place that left me feeling a little thrown for a loop but I loved the direction the author was taking and in the end it all worked out for the best. We got to also see Jupe more on his own although the direction he was taking I was hoping it all worked out for him and he wasn’t digging a big hole for himself to need help getting out of. I loved how resourceful and smart this kid was though and would love if the author made a spin off series for him as he gets older. Cady’s powers get amped up in this book and I loved seeing her come to grips with all of it. She really held herself together well with all that was thrown at her. Overall I think the author wrapped up this series in a perfect way. I had a few times in the book that I thinking Cady wasn’t going to make it through but she managed to pull through.Read more ›

Banishing the Dark by Jenn Bennett
Paranormal Romance -May 27th, 2014
4 stars

As the forth in the author's Urban Fantasy series. Arcadia Bell is the fabled Moonchild with powers she is yet to understand. She isjust recovering from injuries from her last battle. When she discovers that she is pregnant and that her power hungry mother wants to steal her powers and may use her unborn child. Weak and confused, Arcadia is vulnerable. To protect herself and her child she decides to have her memory erased so they her mother cannot find her. When she wakes up she is confused and disoriented. And she has forgotten her boyfriend, Lon! As they both try to discover secrets behind Arcadia's past and the prophecy behind the Moonchild, Lon's son Jupe is also trying to help and finding himself in mischief. But what happens when Arcadia regains her memories? Will she be able to keep one step ahead of her vicious mother and more importantly, will she forgive Lon?

I would highly recommend reading these books in order. This book felt like a transition book. A lot is going on and seems to continue seamlessly from the prior book. Since I missed the prior book, Binding in the Shadows, I felt lost and it took me a while to reorient myself to the storyline. Arcadia has a lot to deal with, not only is she fumbling with her powers but she has memory loss, too! This story is tense and unpredictable so readers will not be bored. Arcadia's mother depth of evil reaches new lows. On the lighter side, Jupe, the son of Arcadia's lover, Lon. Is also growing into his powers. He is a fun read, precocious and always caught up in trouble. I think the best part is that Arcadia gets to know Lon again. So if you like their romance, you will get more!

Finishing a beloved series is always difficult, but Jenn Bennett ended the Arcadia Bell series with as much chemistry, adventure, and love as the strongest of its predecessors. In BANISHING THE DARK, readers have a chance to revisit and enjoy the relationships and characters that made us fall in love in the first place. From the chemistry between Lon and Cady to the loyalty and love Cady feels for her new family, this book satisfyingly focuses on the “happy” that Cady can take with her into the “ever after”.

Though Cady’s homicidal mother spends much of her time still trapped in the Aether, her presence is palpable throughout the book. Whether through memories of Cady’s childhood or in the evasive maneuvers that interrupt some of the happiest times of Lon and Cady’s life, she’s an effective villain. Still, her remote menace leaves room to enjoy one of the strongest aspects of this series, these characters and their relationships. While Cady and Lon share a courtship and chemistry that is familiar to UF readers, they are far from typical or one dimensional. In falling in love with Lon, Cady not just a girlfriend, but a stepmother for Jupe, a role she adopts wholeheartedly. BANISHING THE DARK also shows us Lon’s loyalty and nurturing nature, Jupe’s impulsive and loving side, and the depth of Cady’s past unhappiness contrasted against the brightness of her future.

With so much at stake for these beloved characters, I found the action at the end to be satisfying without overwhelming the sweeter aspects of the story. A series finale that makes me feel all of these characters have gotten their HEA, BANISHING THE DARK is everything Lon and Cady and Jupe deserve.

Sexual Content: Sex scenes.
