5.0 out of 5 stars Continued soundtrack excellence from Rare., May 23, 2008
This review is from: Banjo-Kazooie The Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I recently revisted my Nintendo 64 collection, and I was reminded when playing Banjo-Kazooie just how fantastic the soundsmiths at Rare were back in the day.

Despite the Nintendo 64's audio limitations, Rare consistently created amazing musical output in its games during this era. Conker's Bad Fur Day, Jet Force Gemini, and Banjo-Kazooie's sequel Banjo-Tooie had diverse, fantastic soundtracks. But nothing can hold a candle to Banjo-Kazooie's astonishing collection of musical styles, themes, and motifs.

The centerpiece of the album, "Witch's Lair," is also the centerpiece in the game. This is the theme for the overworld in the game, which was made all the more memorable because of its constant music shifts - possible only on Nintendo's system, thanks to the MIDI format. The song is just as memorable here as it was in the game.

Immediate favorites are Freezeey Park, a winter-esque diddly; Rusty Bucket Bay, which is also my favorite level in the game; and Click Clock Wood, who's theme song was memorable in the game for shifting along with the seasons.

Lest not forget other highlights such as the credits, final battle, and Treasure Trove Cove. Really, there isn't a bad track on here; even the Egyptian-themed Gobi's Valley is enjoyable, when similar fare in the hands of less-talented tunesmiths would be campy and silly.

Overall, this is an excellent companion for one of the Nintendo/Rare era's finest moments. And, yes, for the record, Banjo-Kazooie is better than Super Mario 64.

Just a note for everyone, who wants to buy this great soundtrack:

There exists 2 versions of this soundtrack in the USA:
- The one with the t-shirt
- And the second one without the t-shirt but with a white background

Both versions contains 17 tracks.
Although the back of the case says that only 15 tracks are on the disc, the 2 bonus bonus-tracks are still on the disc:
Track
16: Banjo Overture
17: Squirrel
