Professor Sayers' magisterial three-volume history of the Bank of England in the first half of the twentieth-century was first published as a three-volume set in 1976. The text volumes, 1 and 2, are available in paperback as a single volume, which tells how the Bank responded to the needs of two world wars and to the political and economic stresses at home and internationally.
