Bank robbery, teenage style, September 5, 2009
This review is from: Bank Job (Paperback)
Thirteen-year-old Nell (who goes by "Nails") and her two teenage foster brothers have each lived through hard times, so they are grateful to have a good foster home now. Disaster strikes when the social worker tells the Hardys, their foster parents, that their home does not meet the new government regulations. They must add another bathroom or get rid of two kids. Unfortunately, the bathroom addition would cost ten thousand dollars, and the Hardys don't have any extra money. The bank won't give them a loan, and other resources fail.
The teens are desperate to raise the money. They don't want to lose the best placement they've ever had, so they decide the only way to get ten thousand dollars fast is to rob a bank...or two.
The back stories of the foster kids' lives are touching, but I found it hard to believe that teenagers would actually attempt bank robbery. So I was amazed to read in the authors' bio that they got the idea for this story from a newspaper article about three teens who robbed a series of banks.
A quick read; might appeal to kids who've had a rough life. Ages 10-14.
