5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool for your Sister Circle Book Club, September 6, 2007
This review is from: The Bankrupt Spirit: Principles for Turning Setbacks into Comebacks (Paperback)
How often do you let disappointments get you down? Do you allow the problems of the world take your joy away? The Bankrupt Spirit encourages readers to seek God to understand their purpose, reclaim joy in their hearts, and calmness in their soul. Congress uses the metaphor of the banking industry to illustrate how to take control of your life and live for God. The steps are: Confirmation, Confession, Commitment, Control, Composition and Cultivation. Exercises, tools and references to scripture round out the information presented making the knowledge applicable and practical for everyone.

Congress uses plain language grounded in the Word to assist readers in recapturing their love of God. The reader is responsible for connecting with God at all times in order to increase their spiritual bank account. Our investments will control the interest of our accounts while our attention to detail aids in diversifying our portfolios minimizing the risk of bankruptcy.

However, this book helps us to identify when and where our spirits became bankrupt and more importantly what to do about it! Dr. Congress writes with the words of a seasoned spirit and there is gentle healing in this tool. It is written in a non-condemming way and is full of truthful encouragement. "The Bankrupt Spirit" the name alone gets you thinking. Is my spirit bankrupt, is yours?

According to this author yes, we all have, have had or will have a bankrupt spirit. However unlike most religious books I didn't feel inadequate, I felt human. Like a work in progress seeking the peace of the kingdom if God. Also I wasn't left wondering, wait until the end of the book to began remedying my bankrupt spirit. Go get this book read it began removing the emotional baggage that you put on yourself. That emotion baggage keeps your spiritual account overdrawn.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drawing upon the wisdom of Jeremiah 1:10, February 4, 2005
This review is from: The Bankrupt Spirit: Principles for Turning Setbacks into Comebacks (Paperback)
The debut self-help book by Christian author Vivi Monroe Congress, The Bankrupt Spirit: Principles For Turning Setbacks Into Comebacks deals with the common inner state of being she calls "spiritual bankruptcy". Drawing upon the wisdom of Jeremiah 1:10, The Bankrupt Spirit shows how to identify and deal with the catastrophic effects of life events and problems that can damage our divine inheritance of spiritual, physical, and financial well-being. Financial terms are aptly integrated to parallel the bondage (or debt) that occurs when there is a state of brokeness in our ability to draw upon our "faith account" in the Word (or bank) of God and how Christian men and women can overcome life adversities by applying life skills secured through the wisdom of God. The Bankrupt Spirit is an excellent addition to any Christian Living reference collection or Christian Inspirational Studies supplemental reading list.

A bankrupt spirit is a spirit that has been broken by life's trials and tribulations. Author Vivi Monroe Congress states how grief and misery manifests in our lives and how well we deal with these things is totally dependent on our response to the situation. In other words, it is imperative to keep everything in perspective. When we continue to dwell in a downtrodden state, this affects God's creditworthiness in the eyes of our naysayers. It also reiterates the fact that as a Christian believer, we should steadfastly praise God despite the circumstances.

In THE BANKRUPT SPIRIT, Congress adeptly cites many Biblical references throughout the text to positively enforce her message of having a motivatal outlook. She reminds us that during challenging times, it is imperative that we keep our spiritual guard up and break the chains of bondage that steal away our joy. God doesn't give us more than we can bear, therefore, we must trust Him to see us through our valley experiences. To break the bonds of spiritual bankruptcy, we must first get real with ourselves by unearthing all of our bad habits and negative influences. As stated in Jeremiah 29:11, God wants us to prosper. He gives us hope and arms us with a plan for the future.

In THE BANKRUPT SPIRIT, Congress takes us on a journey from spiritual bankruptcy to spiritual wealth and healing, by providing a systematic approach of realization, acceptance and growth. The flowing manner in which she writes will immediately draw the reader into her message and will cause reflection. One thing I especially liked was that a summary listing of all the scriptures quoted in the text was provided in the end. In my opinion, this is a wonderful study tool to utilize when examining the scriptures for yourself. No matter the denomination or Christian affiliation, THE BANKRUPT SPIRIT will be a blessing to its readers.

This review is from: The Bankrupt Spirit: Principles for Turning Setbacks into Comebacks (Paperback)
The Bankrupt Spirit shows Christian readers the true value of their lives. Based on Jeremiah 1:10, the author looks at the causes of spiritual bankruptcy and gives some Biblical teaching on how to develop a positive and fruitful account. Financial terms are creatively used, which connects these concepts vividly in readers' minds.

Written in an engaging and upbeat style, the strategies are clearly outlined. Using the principles set forth in Jeremiah, readers are encouraged to root out and pull down negative influences, before building up and establishing spiritual health and power the Lord's way. There is a very orderly flow to this book, with each chapter beginning with an appropriate Scripture verse. Also scattered throughout the book are inspirational quotes, dovetailing beautifully with the various points the author makes.

The author's knowledge of the Bible, combined with her training in psychology, gives this book a contemporary blend of the sacred and the secular. To achieve the goal of spiritual well being, readers are encouraged to use prayer, meditation and visualization. There is also an interactive element within these pages, including an emotional intelligence test as well as a financial planning worksheet.

The book is highly motivational, with its purpose being to release people from whatever type of bondage they are in, whether it's grief, debt, drugs, or something else. There is a real feeling of caring throughout, which is certain to be felt by all readers.

The author believes the key to realizing your dreams is knowledge. Readers will be gloriously reminded that they are children of the King, with all the rich benefits that entails.

The Bankrupt Spirit is wealth for your body, soul and mind, written for today's contemporary audience.
