This review is from: Banner, Forward! the Pictorial Biography of a Guide Dog. (Library Binding)
So little has been written in the raising and training of guide dogs for the blind. I first came to this book when I was 13 years old. Even then, the complex and facinating journey that not all dogs can undertake had me in awe. This book, in minute detail, explains with word and pictures the intensive training that the chosen few are given. The book is a blend of realities, only in bringing together the pictures and experiences of several dogs under a single name- Banner. From the moment that they are brought into this world, Banner and his siblings are watched very closely. The traits of each being closely monitored. Soon formal tests of thier abilities and attitudes would begin. The book continues with the social interactions, and how Banner learned and responds to the private family that takes on the initial reponsibilty for her basic training. How Banner takes correction and learns the rules of the road. Then she is off to more specialized and intense training. To learn to function smoothly, physically and mentally. The book photographicly details many of the lessons that must be learned. All of this before the dog is even put in the harness. In the harness, the book displays and depicts the rigorous traning that takes place. How Banner learns to interact with the busy world that she will soon be leading her new owner.

The book then goes into detail about the prospective owners of the "in training" guide dogs. How the owners themselves must be screened and trained in the proper use of their new "eyes". All of this prior to the trainers deciding which dog is a good match for which owner. The book then shows how the new owner and Banner bond and begin to work as a team in all facets of thier new lives. It is not all peaches and cream at the start, they both have to learn to adjust to each other and how they are going to interact in society.

The book ends extremely encouragingly. The book shows the new life that Banner has afforded her new master. She was free to enjoy life on an equal basis with all the world.

Now 25 years later, I am still in awe of the awesome love and responsibility that trainers for seeing eye dogs have. That through their efforts the disavantaged CAN live happy, productive and enhanced lives with their guide dogs.

This book gave me this love and admiration for all who breed, raise and train man's best friend for such a noble cause.
