Book Description

March 19, 1992 0192619136 978-0192619136 7
This textbook emphasizes the fundamental attraction of neurology: the balance between clinical history, often with subtle psychological aspects; and knowledge of the basic anatomy and physiology of brain function. It clearly explains how to diagnose and treat common neurological disorders. Since the publication of the sixth edition, there have been extraordinary technical advances in neurology, most notably in the fields of molecular genetics and new imaging techniques. There are new sections on each of these topics. This volume also has a new chapter on the neurological complications of AIDS. Many new topics have been introduced and there have been major revisions to most chapters, particularly to those on vascular disease, the dystonias, Alzheimer's disease and dementia, parkinsonism, neuromuscular diseases, multiple sclerosis, and the neurological consequences of neoplasms. New material is included on extradural hematomas, the Lambert Eaton myasthenic syndrome, inflammatory myopathies, Huntington's disease, the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, cerebral malaria, the anterior spinal artery syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating neuropathies, sarcoidosis, the MTPT parkinsonism model, multiple system atrophy, lipoidoses, and the Arnold-Chiari malformation.

Editorial Reviews

Review

`...have managed to preserve the lucid descriptions of the original while accommodating the massive advances of the past 30 years. Generalists might argue with justification that there's no comparable neurological textbook in English.' British Medical Journal

'Sir Roger Bannister has asssembled the best illustrations and best diagrams of any textbook of Neurology.' EMR Critchley, Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, August 1992

'... have managed to preserve the lucid descriptions of the original while accommodating the massive advances of the past 30 years. Generalists might argue with justification that there's no comparable neurological textbook in English.' Alex Paton, BMJ, June 1993

'Its longevity and evident success have been giving testimony to the impressive qualities of this book. There is a certain magic of a well-written one-author textbook which cannot be rivalled by panels of leading subspecialists. Hence, the Brain-Bannister is most warmly recommended: not merely for medical students and resident physicians in training, but also for experienced neurologists. The bargain price of the paperback will serve as an extra stimulus for its purchase.' E. Niedermeyer, The Johns Hopkins University and Hospital

5.0 out of 5 stars valuable in school and later as a reference, June 5, 2001

Excellent reference even out of school. The sections are: "symptoms, signs and investigations," "disorders of anatomical regions," "infections," "diffuse and system disorders," and "psychological factors in neurology." The diagrams really helped me with learning function and dysfunction in several areas: cranial nerves, epilepsy, headaches, parkinsonism, MS, multiple other disorders. This book is well divided for easy reading into brief chapters with diagrams, photos of imaging studies and even photos of clinical signs and patient presentation where applicable.
