Editorial Reviews

Kendra is the newest signee on Wax Poetics Records, the Brooklyn-based label run by the esteemed music magazine of the same name. For the past year, Kendra has been putting her mark on the current blue eyed-soul scene with her lush harmonies, big voice, tightly spun lyrical prowess, knack for writing a hook and downright funky accompaniments. As Interview magazine says, Although she could be compared to Amy Winehouse, Adele and Joss Stone, the best analogy for Morris might be a modern-day Janis Joplin.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kendra Morris instant classic September 3, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
What an amazing album. Easily one of the best releases of 2012. Morris has one of the most intoxicating voices I've heard in years. On top of that, her song writing is full of interesting twists of phrase and plot that matches wonderfully with the genius production work of the amazing Jeremy Page. It may sound like a cliche, but there is something for everyone on Banshee. For example you have the west-coasty-cruising vibe of "If You Didn't Go" and the hard driving throb of the title track, Banshee. Because of this variety I'm still discovering new things with each listen. The very best part is that prior to this first full album, Morris has released other shockingly great music. Shocking because it's been "undiscovered" till now. So now I can catch up on what this most unique new talent has been quietly offering up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Spellbinding August 29, 2012
Format:Audio CD
The album is truly well-named as the vocals really can cast a spell. Powerful, emotionally dense songwriting and spooky instrumentation that evokes a supernatural wasteland that beckons if you lose your footing on the tightrope. A rare and transporting album.

5.0 out of 5 stars SOUL!!! September 21, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Kendra's first full length does not disappoint. It's a serious SOUL powerhouse filled with wonderfully crafted tunes made with real instruments. This is what contemporary R&B should be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! January 31, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I loved this CD. I heard Kendra Morris interviewed on NPR and I was hooked the moment I heard a sampling. This CD does not disappoint. Only sorry she is not recognized at the same level as Adele. Hoping she will be in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sleeper album of 2012 January 12, 2013
Format:Audio CD
I rarely ever write reviews on Amazon, but felt compelled to after discovering Kendra Morris and this fantastic album she created. When I'm not listening to this album, I find myself humming tracks from it. It's not often that an album sticks with me so well.

Beautiful work, and I hope she springboards off this to even richer, deeper and darker territory in forthcoming releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great From the First Listen December 29, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I especially love the first 5 or 6 songs. I heard an interview with her on NPR and decided to buy it because it was so catchy - interesting vocal mixes and good lyrics. Her voice has a slight Amy Winehouse quality to it but she is quite original.

5.0 out of 5 stars Seriously great music! August 28, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I love her voice.

Kendra Morris has managed to create some of the most beautiful, inspiring and emotive songs that I have heard in a long time. Her voice has the type of complexity that keeps you coming back over and over. There is so much that transpires in this album that it would be a critical loss for one to not hear it in its entirety. There is so much soul and so music depth in every track that I honestly did not expect. But when I actually listened to her music, it was a total but pleasant surprise. I'm so glad that I've been introduced to a musician of her caliber. Definitely a must have.

Some of my favorite tracks (in no particular order):
*Concrete waves
*If you didn't go

Just an amazing album. I play it at work on random repeat for hours at a time. I usually don't "buy the CD" anymore, but this one is a keeper.

This collection is wonderful. Also look into "Mockingbird" a collection of covers on classic pop and rock. She is a wonderful performer.
