Professor John Traupman produced a wonder book for Latinists, cross word puzzle workers, or just those who want to know a little about the Latin connection of English. It is the finest concise, small in size, {It fits in my field jacket pocket.} Latin/English, English/Latin dictionary in the world. His paradigms for Latin grammar, in the front of the dictionary is wonderful. There are no better. Essential for the Latin student, teacher, or Classicist. Valuable for those who just want to read Latin works in the original.

It has the words I want to look up,
By Peter R. Chastain "perpetual student" (San José, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Bantam New College Latin & English Dictionary, Revised Edition (Mass Market Paperback)
I wanted a Latin dictionary that would be easy to carry, so I went to a local bookstore and looked at several, using my standard technique for choosing dictionaries: I tried finding certain words in all of them. This was the only one with names of many "private" body parts and sexual practices.
It is not so much that I need to look up those particular words; I just think that a dictionary that excludes them is probably deficient in other respects. I like Vergil, but I also want to read the language of the streets. All dictionaries translate words in isolation, but this one does a particularly good job of showing how they are used in common idiomatic expressions. For example, "thank you for" is translated "gratias tibi ago ob (w. acc)." I own four Latin dictionaries and sometimes use others online, but this is the one I use most often.

Best Latin dictionary of its size for the money,

Traupman's New College Latin and English Dictionary is the best small dictionary you can get for the money, bar none. Dr. Traupman really does know his words. I have several copies stashed in various places, and give them to my students as "praemia" (rewards.) There are cuter dictionaries, and bigger ones, but this one will definitely see you safely through your undergrad work (and part of your grad work too) and will be the dictionary you grab as you are looking for just the right definition of most of the Latin that life might chance to throw your way.

Having studied Latin as a high school student, undergraduate, and graduate student, I can say that this is the one portable and concise dictionary that's accompanied me through the years. It is good to have a larger and more comprehensive dictionary for reference- but you can throw this one in your backpack and go. I especially like the fact that there are enough specialized words in this dictionary- from Catullus, Caesar, Horace, etc.- to last a student through advanced translation courses. Much better than the Oxford portable Latin dictionary, and others I've tried.

This is a very handy and concise Latin Dictionary, plus it has a number of idiomatic phrases -- both Latin and English.
There are a few typos in the grammar guide, but it's easy to figure out what was going on. It's also simple, straight-forward, and direct. It gives shades of meanings for major words like facio or venio. Can't be beat for the price.

Latin is a challenging language to learn because
the average person doesn't speak it or listen to others speaking Latin. This work has a careful delineation of the major conjugations, the use of singulars/ plurals and the major declensions. The word dictionary is comprehensive. The purchase would be helpful for the first time student of Latin in your house. Dr. Joseph S. Maresca

Great for the price and size!,

This dictionary is small, but don't let its size fool you! It is full of Latin-English and English-Latin words. It has a helpful quick grammar review in the front, along with a very nifty pronunciation guide. There are many, many words; however, a few of the less used, more obscure nouns are missing. It really helps with homework. This dictionary displays words in the usual manner; nominative singular, genitive singular for nouns and all four principle parts for verbs. The size is also perfect. It's not so small that you could lose it, but it is not big, bulky, or heavy. It holds up really well and the glossy, bright cover looks professional; however, in the picture displayed here, the background for the word "Latin" is blue, but on the actual copy, it is purple. I also noticed that it has some "Neo-Latin vocabulary," which is not helpful at all. This is not enough to detract from its value, however, because for the price, this is an extremely good deal.

Latin Teacher Loves This Dictionary,

I have a Masters Degree in Classics and have taught Latin for 19 years. This is the first dictionary I grab when facing words I do not know. The dictionary is thorough, quick, and easy to use, and the print is clean and legible. There are entries that are useful for conversational Latin, and entries that are helpful for Latin from a wide range of time-periods. I am going to a summer immersion program in Latin this year. That's right: one week of speaking, listening, reading, and writing, all in Latin! I will bring other dictionaries, but I plan on this one being my "vade mecum" to carry with me around campus.
