2.0 out of 5 stars A man and his guitar...................., November 3, 2004
By vyper (Minneapolis) - See all my reviews
A true solo album from Yamamoto, and one for only truly patient and open minded music fans.

This album has Yamamoto playing electric and acoustic guitar, although there is some multitracking, the majority of this sounds improvised.

On other albums I've heard Yamamoto pull off perfect funk licks, beautiful ambient/psychedelic stylings, classical guitar lines, even Hawaiian slack key influences and banjo playing.

But the hallmark of Yamamoto's style is kind of a cartoonish, amatuerish, short attention span.He rarely bothers to play lines perfectly(if he can at all),at times, especially on Baptism,he sounds like a kid whose been playing less than 2 years trying to pull off jazz and improv.

Most of the tracks here are just pure guitar, very little(if any)effects or postproduction sheen. While it does sound very amatuerish at times(real musicians/guitarists could give a better technical review of Yamamoto's talent),it's not without it's moments.

Yamamoto does pull off some pretty melodies while playing around, but again,it would be so much better if he just sat down and wrote out the melodies and structured them into a real song. He's been recording since the mid to late eighties so I KNOW he is capable of putting together acceptable,if simplistic, instrumentals.

Fans of experimental guitar music would do well to preview this cd before buying.
