I got this book because a friend of mine told me that it's a great suspense and conspiracy story. However, I didn't expect to be that quickly drawn into a fascinating world of shamanism, paganism or early Christianity. There are parts of this story that are absolutely enthralling - like the spiritual construct of the universe, our power to use it for good or bad, or a sinister plan of the dark brotherhood to change the course of our history. You can't stop thinking that it's not fiction alone but there must be some truth to it, as the author weaves well researched facts into his story. Yes, I got hooked after the first 20 pages and didn't stop until I finished Baqca four days later. I don't think I will ever again be able to look at our world and history in the same way.

While other reviews mention the author's writing style being a bit odd, it is the use of words in the shamanistic style that I think causes that. It is written to almost induce a dreaming state and it succeeds repeatedly. I was drawn in on a level that informed my own dreams for months. The historical research is quite good and the fictional elements are mostly the characters themselves. I wish they would hurry up and publish the rest of the trilogy!

While the shamanist theme and inventive story are engaging, the writer seems determined to disrupt the reader by providing italicized emphasis for the characters' dialog. More often making the reader pause and wonder why it's there, rather than elucidating the charater's speach.

The flow is disrupted by frequently confused sentence structure requiring reparsing to figure out what's intended.
