Product Description

Bar Harbor Foods sits on a picturesque wharf on a beautiful sheltered cove in Downeast Maine. The cries of gulls echo across the water; the tide laps against pilings as the tie lines of the fishing boats stretch and creak in the sun and fog. This is where we make our premium specialty seafood – fresh off the docks of Maine. While the business has expanded and changed over the past 85 years, Downeast Maine still inspires all our products. Our premium foods reflect naturally delicious New England cuisine and authentic Maine traditions. We like to keep things simple, from original recipes and fresh natural ingredients, to the appealing simplicity of our labels. Our specialty seafood and other fine foods are made in small batches and packed and canned mostly by hand, just like people on the coast of Maine have been doing for generations. Bar Harbor is a special place – you can taste it!

The Bar Harbor canned fish products are of the highest quality and offer a great value. I've had this product, the Cabernet wine sauce and the cracked pepper varieties.

Of the three, this is my favorite with the wine sauce a nice second. The cracked pepper type is essentially this one with black pepper added, which really doesn't work for me (but is still far better than most canned fish).

The fish is soft and moist and is not overpowered by any heavy handed oils or weird additives. Very simple and pure ingredients give it a very clean taste with a wonderful texture.

I highly recommend it!

Normally I buy Appel (imported) or Trader Joe's brand tinned herring, but was looking for a variety without canola oil and stumbled upon these on Amazon. Upon ordering these, I had a tin right after I received them. The price is right - the other varieties I was buying were slightly more expensive and usually there were few in stock at the store - maybe 1-4 cans only. The Bar Harbor herring is great - no canola oil, tin is easy to open, and the fish is just the right texture and taste - not too smoky, not too overpowering. These are great and I'll definitely be reordering!

This product is evidently produced in Canada, probably in New Brunswick, from wild herring harvested in or about the Bay of Fundy or the Gulf of Maine.

The herring are filleted and then lightly smoked before canning. The result is a delicious, healthy and wholesome
food item that mates well with warm, crusty French bread or multi-grain crackers. Highly recommended.

I eat Kippers all the time. I have found that there is no correlation between price and quality. These pretend to be from local fisherman in Maine.I am from Maine, I could not find this company until I went to Google Maps. These guys are inland, and buying this stuff from Canada and Europe. No problem with that but please do not BS us. There kippers are only OK. I like King Oscar better, and Polar after that. And both those are cheaper. I do like that they have a goodly sized portion, but I can eat two King Oscars for less than one of theirs. Just saying.

After reading all the reviews I was really looking forward to getting these. The arrived and I excitedly opened a can. The texture was soft and the fish fell apart at the slightest touch. I could barely pick it up with a fork as it broke into a million little mushy pieces every time I touched it. I thought it must be a fluke- an odd can that was abnormal. Every can I have opened is the same. The flavor is fine but the texture is totally off-putting. I'll not buy any more.

Go ahead and google it. Oily fish like herring and mackerel keep you well down there. They're chock-full of omega-3 fats. Just as important, these little lifesavers--unlike tuna--are at the bottom of the fishy food chain, meaning that they have much lower mercury levels than well, tuna. I've been eating herring for years and Bar Harbor's taste like they just came out of the sea. Okay, that's not true but they do taste much better than every other canned fish I've tried.

1000% better than the Kippers you get at the Super Market. These are delicious and the smoked flavor makes these a delicious cross between smoked bacon and sardines. But these Smoked Herring are better than bacon. Delicious, buy these and give them a try, they will fly off the kitchen shelf and make a great breakfast.

Lately I have been indulging in canned fish, like the Angelo Parodi skinless and boneless sardines (which I like a lot). I've always like pickled herring, so I decided to give some canned herring a chance. I tried the Bar Harbor wild herring with cracked pepper, which is pretty good and has a slightly smoky flavor. But these natural smoked wild kippers beat the pants off that. They are incredibly satisfying to eat. I like how you don't have to do anything to them. They aren't packed in oil, like someone said, but herring is an oily fish. Maybe if you are used to eating those kippers that look like they are nicotine stained, these kippers will be bland. To me, they have a just-right amount of smoking. Also, they are not mushy but they are not stiff either, like a good sardine. I will be buying a lot more of these in the future, I can tell you that.
