5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! My 2 year old actually LOVES this book!
So yeah, we got this book as a gag gift I think. My daughter was born just before Obama was elected president. I thumbed through the book and immediately thought, my kid's never gonna like this but I kept it cause it was historical, educational, and featured minorities. It's important to me that my child see a variety of DIFFERENT ethnicities, religions and family...

1.0 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me?
Let the indoctrinations begin! Why would there be a board book full of hero worship for someone who hasn't been proven? Question with boldness why a book like this was created. I read this book and it's complex and small type and was astounded by the inadequate way it appeals to toddlers (whom which board books are for!) If you want a keepsake for yourself, by all means...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! My 2 year old actually LOVES this book!, September 20, 2010
This review is from: Barack Obama 101: My First Presidential-board-book (Board book)
So yeah, we got this book as a gag gift I think. My daughter was born just before Obama was elected president. I thumbed through the book and immediately thought, my kid's never gonna like this but I kept it cause it was historical, educational, and featured minorities. It's important to me that my child see a variety of DIFFERENT ethnicities, religions and family structures featured in her books. So I kept it. Yes, there are other books featuring black people, but hey, we already had this one; the more diverse our library, the merrier.

So there it stayed on her book shelf until my daughter rediscovered it about a month ago. And now it's one of the books she asks for by name! At first I couldn't figure out why. She has lots of other books (which she also likes) and this one seemed so boring, and it is boring, to me. But a toddler gets to see several REAL life photos of people's faces, and there are several photos per page. There is also a spread with a picture of the white house (she loves houses all of the sudden) and another page with "the presidential motorcade." That page is a real hit because it features things that go! Like the plane, helicopter and limousine that the president rides in. And then there is a world map photo on the last page which is an excellent opportunity for advanced thought and discussion with your little one.

It actually IS a good children's book. It took my child awhile to get into reading AT ALL, even though I kept trying and trying. It's INCREDIBLE that my kid lets me read ALL of the text to this book because it's not short on text by any means! Surely she doesn't even understand most of the vocabulary, but it is a great way to stimulate her brain. Perhaps she will have an easier time learning these big words when she is older, than if she had never gotten into the book.

And seriously folks, it is NOT "indoctrination" so get a grip on your loathing. The text could not be more dull, or more matter of fact. It is a dry picture book about our 44th president. And practically NO ONE would have a problem if it was the EXACT same book but featuring Grover Cleveland or Ford or someone like that. So how is this book any different??? It's a HISTORY book (for toddlers) above all else and it is surprisingly PERFECTLY age appropriate for age 0-3, in our family at least.

I admit if 8 years ago or less, if someone had given me a version of this book, but featuring Bush, it would have been given to goodwill. Because I can't stand Bush's politics (and also because I didn't even have children.) But I wouldn't have gone ranting and whining to Amazon reviews to trash talk the book itself. This style of book is a good book. To say otherwise ONLY because you hate the politics of the person (or hate the person!) featured is dishonest and a bit pathetic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for young and old to enjoy together! Great pictures!!, March 21, 2009
This review is from: Barack Obama 101: My First Presidential-board-book (Board book)
I bought this for a friend's 2 year old and got a huge thank you from both parents... They loved having a book that was appropriate for their daughter yet a bit "interesting" for themselves... Simple layout with lots and lots of interesting color photographs of the President's early years; it's charming, non-political and all around fun. Their fave picture is the one of the President at an amusement park with his kids in a go-kart type vehicle. This makes a good birthday gift or 4th of July/Memorial Day gift for children age 6 months - 6 years!

This review is from: Barack Obama 101: My First Presidential-board-book (Board book)
Nice book. I got it for my 22 month old, and it can easily be tailored down for her age, but also read to an older child (5 or 6).

5.0 out of 5 stars A great gift and collector's item, April 19, 2009

This review is from: Barack Obama 101: My First Presidential-board-book (Board book)
I highly recommend this book for young children (and their parents!). I attended the same high school as Barack Obama in Hawaii -- but I promise this is an unbiased review! It has interesting information at the right level for children to absorb and be intrigued to learn more. Inspirational. Informative. Great photos too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well conceived and expertly published, February 15, 2009
This review is from: Barack Obama 101: My First Presidential-board-book (Board book)
The election of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States has already had a profound cultural impact as well as a political one. "Barack Obama 101" is a newly published board book for very young children that is replete with full color photos of Barack Obama's family, children, education, early career, and his election to the highest office of the country. Informed and informative, "Barack Obama 101" offers specific details about the presidency, explains the powers of the commander in chief, highlights the White House, identifies Air Force One, and features a final page into which an adult can slide a photo of a child making "Barack Obama 101" a truly personalized memento and family heirloom -- perhaps inspiring a child to one day become President themselves. Well conceived and expertly published, "Barack Obama 101" is enthusiastically recommended as a gift for any preschool aged child.

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT a book appropriate for a 0-3 year old., October 13, 2009
This review is from: Barack Obama 101: My First Presidential-board-book (Board book)
Ridiculous idea for a book. NOT appropriate for a 0-3 year old as Barnes and Noble "Board Books 0-3" section suggests. I was amazed to find it while looking for books for my 14 month old son. I opened it up to find photos of Obama's father, etc. absolutely unacceptable reading material. This is indoctrination and it is sick.
