5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite! And a source of deep pride, January 16, 2009

This review is from: Barbados: an Island Portrait (Hardcover)
Let me say first of that this is a biased review I am first and foremost after all a Bajan. Most coffee books on Barbados often lack the necessary homegrown viewpoint and often present a postcard view which while stunning does not do enough to differentiate 'Bim' from the other lovely Caribbean islands that are collectively known as the British West Indies.

On the other side many often present a glowing, albeit anachronistic view of a 'Little England' Barbados glossing over the impact of American culture and globalization as a whole. This book does not fall prey to these traps, it accurately and its totality presnets Barbados as is while praising our distinctiveness without becoming insular admitting our faults and still stands on its own and a stunning testament on travel art.

This is a breathtaking book showing me pictures of places of my youth long gone and still present, on the technical side each photo is flawlessly executed and are excellent works of photographic art standing on their own and the writing of Peter Laurie explains our idiosycrancies with brevity, honesty and humor without it being demeaning or condenscending

A great gift whether as a coffe book or a semi-informative guide for anyone at anytime.

I enjoyed this book thoroughly. I learned from it things that I did not previously know, and I am from the beautiful island of Barbados. It is very well written and the photograpghy is outstanding. The combination made me home sick so I am planning a trip back to "the rock".Barbados an Island Portrait [HC,2005]
