Gr 6-8--These series entries feature smoothly flowing, clearly organized narratives enhanced by frequent, well-placed primary-source quotes; historical background material; and black-and-white photos and reproductions. Of the two, Jeffrey's book has more frequent and higher-quality illustrations. Schraff has compiled a more impressive list of sources, many of which are recent publications, including Powell's 1995 autobiography. The author shows attention to detail, with many documented references and a scholarly text. Elaine Landau's Colin Powell (Watts, 1991) features more and larger illustrations, many of which are in color. Both of these new titles will be welcome additions, especially where there is a strong need for well-written, up-to-date biographies.
