5.0 out of 5 stars Marriner has the feeling and tempo, September 15, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Barber: Adagio for Strings; Ives; Symphony No. 3; Copland: Quiet City (Audio CD)
This is a favourite recording of mine since high school in the 70's. It's vinyl form was lost to difficult times in young days. Before finally replacing this on CD, I had bought other versions of my favourite compositions from this recording, but this is the one to get for most all of these works. Marriner connects all the environs of the Ives Symphony 3 with masterful story telling that is deeply moving, never flippant nor sweet before the phrase carries you there. This is the best recording of Cowell's Hymn and Fuguing Tune No.10 which is an undiscovered gem; other recordings drag it out which ruins its charm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite Wonderful, September 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Barber: Adagio for Strings; Ives; Symphony No. 3; Copland: Quiet City (Audio CD)
Excellent performances of American works! The Quiet City is wonderful, and I think this is a remarkably atmospheric rendition of the Adagio. The Creston Rumor is a delight, and one of his less dated works.

This was good on LP, and although the CD is a little bright, it is well worth the price of admission.
