Opening in 1905, a woman writes a letter to a young man in military school, who is currently being punished for refusing to say that Mozart is a bad composer. She has an important story to tell him, and our story flashes back 20 years to Russia, where American Jane Calllahan (Julia Ormond), is traveling to Moscow. Jane's father, Douglas McCracken (Richard Harris), is trying to perfect a machine that will harvest trees from the vast Siberian forests. Douglas, however, hopes Jane can charm Gen. Radlov (Alexei Petrenko), the head of a Russian military academy, into arranging the financing that will enable him to complete his work on the harvester. En route, Jane meets a friendly Russian soldier, Andrei Tolstoy (Oleg Menshikov), and the two soon fall in love. Radlov is also fond of Jane, enough so that he's asked her to marry him; when it becomes evident she'd rather be with Tolstoy, he finds himself shipped off to Siberia after allegedly attacking a grand duke. Merging romance, costume drama and slapstick comedy, The Barber of Siberia was screened at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival.

4.0 out of 5 stars Eva25at is sorely mistaken, October 9, 2007

We can thank Eva25at for explaining the plot of Barber of Siberia to us. Nevertheless, do not be misled by her failure to understand the genius of this movie. The last hour is not at all senseless. It may, however, take a bit of exposure to the Russian film scene, if not also the mindset and culture. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen and I wholeheartedly recommend it. It is deep and gives a peek into a Russia many Westerners are unfamiliar with. Two thumbs up for the script and any wigs involved in the making of this film!

5.0 out of 5 stars Russia's answer to Gone with the Wind!, July 8, 2009

Definitely a great epic movie, the Barber of Siberia, brings to the screen the story of Jane, a beautiful cosmopolitan courtesan and Andrey, a young Cadet in the Imperial Army, during the years of Tsar Alexander III in Holy Russia.
The film combines drama, action, and adventure, making it one of the best of its kind, thus, resurrecting interest in historical films after a long dormant period.
Needless to say, Oleg Menshikov, Julia Ormond, and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least!
The setting, the music and the costumes are all wonderful!
History, Love, Passion, and Honor, are all about.
Nikita Mihalkov has scored his biggest hit yet with the Barber of Siberia, which is guaranteed to shed more than just a few tears.
Strongly recommended along with Admiral and 1612 for those with a soft spot for all things Russian!

5.0 out of 5 stars elating, April 19, 2011
This review is from: Barber of Siberia (1998) ( Sibirskiy Tsiryulnik ) [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2 Import - United Kingdom ] (DVD)
I picked up this movie from amongst a myriad of DVD's of a friend. After the first few minutes I was completely wrapped up in the story. The way the story was handled was intruiging. The cinematograpy, the decor, the sheer magnitude of the richness in almost every scene were enthralling. I think the awards were rightly deserved. Enlightening and very very entertaining, let alone the pleasure I got from just watching a masterpiece.
