Book Description

6 and up1 and up
The Barber's Cutting Edge is a touching celebration of the close relationship between a young African American boy and his community mentor. Jam-packed with little boys, big boys, dads, and neighbors, Mr. Bigalow's barbershop is a familiar place to talk, to play dominoes, to read, and in Rashaad's case, to get a little extra help with his schoolwork. Not only does Mr. Bigalow know all the latest styles, he also knows all the words on Rashaad's vocabulary list. Whether it's haircuts or words, Mr. Bigalow is the best at what he does. He is also a friend and a role model and as Rashaad puts it, "one cool dude."

Holbert's vibrant drawings capture the lively atmosphere and warm spirit of the barbershop.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3?Beautiful, bright crayonlike illustrations highlight this story of an African American boy who visits his local barbershop where a crowd of realistic looking people wait to have their hair cut by "the best barber in town," Mr. Bigalow. Posters and pictures cover the walls, men play checkers at a wooden table, and flowers adorn a packed bookshelf. The interaction between the young boy and his older friend is amusing and entertaining as Rashaad tries to stump the man by giving him difficult words to define. The audience will figure out long before the youngster does that Mr. Bigalow keeps disappearing into that mysterious back room to consult a dictionary, but the message, although slightly didactic, is an important one. Students could be inspired by the vocabulary or simply enjoy this entertaining story.?Jan Shepherd Ross, Dixie Elementary Magnet School, Lexington, KY
