I'm not a Barbie collector. I don't know what such collectors look for in a Barbie, but I can tell you this, expert care and attention was given to this release and it shows.
There's no denying the camp value of this piece. It was the main reason why I wanted to make the purchase. However, what cemented the deal was the execution. The amazing detail in the hair style which mimics Tippi's bun and curls. The detailed jewelry and handbag. The re-creation of the original costume. And of course the evocative packaging.
The box is clear on four sides and black crows have been printed on the sides and top front to give the impression that poor Tippi-Barbie is being attacked. The actual birds on the doll along with the ones printed on the back drop complete the illusion. Whether intended or not, the various methods used seemed to pay tribute to the varied ways Hitchcock portrayed the birds in his classic film.
Obviously this is not a doll for the little ones to play with. It's part of the Black Label collection which is described as "Sensational dolls designed for the adult collector" on the back of the box. I doubt few of these will ever be removed from their boxes as the presentation is done so well.
Unusual. Daring. Campy. Expertly executed.
What a surprisingly apt way to celebrate this Hitchcock masterpiece.

Not really sure if this doll is what we've all been waiting for or a symptom of marketing gone berserk, but I'm glad I own it. Can't imagine what they were thinking when they decided to run this one off the assembly line, though the other Barbie collectibles (especially the Cher doll in which she's dressed like an Outer Space whore) are equally obtuse sometimes.
The doll looks...like Barbie, with Tippi Hedren's hairstyle and costume. The most macabre detail is that she's smiling, while the detachable crows are nesting in her hair and clothing. I wonder why Tippi wasn't given a small phone booth as a setting, but the schoolhouse background covers the experience. Not really a quality, museum-piece item, but for sheer laughs and conversation, practically unbeatable.

This is fantastic! I love Hitchcock AND Barbie! This is the perfect collectable for me. I hope they come out with more Hitchcock Barbies! Vertigo, Psycho, Marnie, Rear Window or Dial M for Murder.... who ever came up with this is a genius!
Of course these are collectables.... adults will be the people interested in buying them.

OMG, I love this Barbie.
Seriously, how collectable is a Barbie thats being attacked by birds - amazing, whoever had the idea to produce a Barbie based on the Tippi Hedren character from the Hitchcock movie 'The Birds' should be awarded some sort of 'great idea' prize!
This was given to me by my partner for my birthday, because I talked so much about it after first seeing it online. I'm in the UK and this Barbie isn't available here, so he had to go through all sorts of trauma's to get Barbie-Birds out of the US.... damn market restrictions!!
However, I'm sooooooooooo pleased I have it - sure, I think its going to be one of THE great Barbie collectable's in the future (consequently she'll never leave her pre-packaged box home!) but I'm now seriously considering starting a Barbie collection!!! Its exactly these kind of uber-collectables that pique someone's interest, so I truly hope that Mattle (or whoever) start thinking of other ramdom adult-collector dolls such as this one.... how about Barbie-Norma Desmond, or Barbie-Mildred Pierce, or Barbie-Alex Forrester (from Fatal Attraction) or even Barbie-Ripley (maybe with alien in tow!!).

I love this doll so much! I was surprised that Barbie took a bold chance on this what turned out to be over exaggerated controversy. I've seen a lot of complaints from other sites and forums on how "shocking" to disgust about this doll with the Barbie name. Really all these whiners need to lighten up! This doll wasn't made with the intention aimed at your children's interest first of all. It's a great conversation collectors item of a piece for the adult in mind! and I am so happy I bought this on It's day of release at the low at the times price and today If I didn't already own this I would pay the over the top $$ to snag one. I keep my in it's box unopened so i can't comment on the feel in quality but will say It sure does look good. I think keeping it's box not only keeps your collectible piece in mint value but also adds to the charm with it's wonderful box background image that I think belongs with this doll, though not saying she wouldn't look good outside of it, just that it adds more to the campy fun of it. Anyone the visits that sees this doll, always gets a kick out of it.
I was really hopping that this was going to be the start to a new series of dolls from Barbie. It has been a couple of years since it's initial release, and from all it's bad rep. It doesn't look as so, curse those whiners! A Misses Norma Bates Barbie! how cool would that have been, maybe in a two set with Ken as Norman. Ha
would have loved to seen that one play out.
