Before you read this, please Google 'samurai.' Now tell me, how exactly is this Japan Ken doll in any way Japanese? The sword? Okay, maybe. Or perhaps the partial woman's obi (kimono belt) around his waist? *Snicker* If someone had said, 'Here's a Ken doll,' and showed me this, I would have thought it was an ancient Chinese, Mongol or Korean version what with that hair, open-chested long coat and Chinese dragon miniskirt(!) - nothing about this says 'Japan.' The whole thing has me scratching my head and wondering how much the design team got paid for this garbage. With the wealth of information and images available on the internet to use as reference, this was the best they could come up with?

If you're buying this because you're a collector and don't really care about stereotypes and gross misrepresentation, and just hope it will icrease in value, then by all means buy it. But if you are under the impression that this is in any way a representation of Japanese culture and/or you are buying this for a child, for the love of god DON'T. Go to *bay and buy them a real Japanese doll from Japan. There are also manga figures (Rurouni Kenshin, Samurai Champloo) that look a whole lot cooler than this AND have collector value.

Bottom line: Barbie collectors only. This one's not for kids.

Most artists know that it is very difficult to produce a male doll that doesn't look a little feminine in its features. I don't know exactly why that is, but once in a while, someone gets it right. Samurai Ken is one such shining example.

With a new facial sculpt, facial features such as a light goatee and manly expression, and costume complete with katana, this Ken has to be one of the finest male dolls Mattel has ever produced, right up there with Ken as Aragorn, Harley Davidson Ken #2, and several Sideshow Toys 12 inch male action figures that are very masculine. Samurai Ken has a place of honor in my doll collection.

Will his honor keep him in the box, or will he cut his way out with his katana to be with his true love, Japan Barbie? Only time will tell, but I guarantee this doll will make a wonderful addition to your collection of male figures, with masculinity and honor that will make you proud to have this Samurai warrior in your home!

This is the most awesome collection Ken ever!! It was sold out in most stores or when I did find it, the box was damaged. I am very happy with my purchase as it came in mint condition. 10 stars!!

Mattel has out done themselves with the first Ken doll in their series of dolls from around the world with JAPAN KEN DOLL. The handsome doll is outfitted with a traditional Samurai costume, long soft-black hair with "chomage" topknot, boots, and "Katana" sword*.

The face paint is quite remarkable, as Ken looks Japanese and gorgeous*.

This doll is probably only educational in that it might get kids wondering about Japan and Samurai history, but other than that I don't think they'd get much out of it.

Anyway, the doll is super cool looking and I'm looking forward to seeing the next "Ken" in this series.

Great for doll collectors and those who are fans of Japanese culture/history.

* I posted pictures above.

The costume is fantastic. His face and hair is great. I bought him strictly for display, not play although I would guess he would be good for both.
Now I just need Japan Barbie to accompany him!

This is my 3rd, and last, Ken doll. Whoever designs Ken has been laboring for years to feminize him. As soon I put him by the other dolls, I saw right away that his coat was a dress. I took it off, along with those strips of cloth on his left arm and brushed out his hair; someone tried to give him a smashed ponytail and tendrils, it looked stupid. There was like a mile of clear plastic around the hilt and right hand. I see in the pic the sword is in his left hand, but mine came with the sword in the right. The artists drawing on the box back was an angry blonde Ken in an action pose, holding the sword in the left. The left hand is shaped differently, and sure enough, he can hold it at a certain angle without dropping it. His left leg is shorter than the right. Not sure why they did that, but if you'll look at Collector Basics Ken #15, he has the same body, same short leg; all they did was put on a different head. I have 3 Oriental dolls and wanted a male to balance it out, but after some research on Samurai warriors, well, the real ones would laugh him out of the country. The facial features are pretty good, but if I'd done my research 1st, I wouldn't have bought it.
