Product Description

Join Barbie as Elina in an all-new Fairytopia adventure! Elina travels with her puffball Bibble to Fairy School at the magnificent Crystal Palace. There, she meets the other fairy apprentices, chosen to learn the annual Flight of Spring and magically create the first rainbow of the season. But when the evil Laverna tries to stop the Flight, threatening to plunge Fairytopia into ten years of bitter winter, Elina and her new friends must learn that "together we are strong." But are they strong enough to defeat Laverna and bring the rainbow to life? And will Bibble, who has a loose tooth, fall in love with the adorable puffball Dizzle?

Believing in oneself can be difficult, even with the support of friends. The formerly wingless fairy Elina has saved Fairytopia more than once, proving herself against Fungus Maximus and turning the evil Laverna into a frog in Barbie Fairytopia and Barbie Fairytopia--Mermaidia, but she still questions her own abilities when Guardian Azura selects her to become her apprentice and learn the all-important flight of spring--a ritual which ensures another year of vitality in Fairytopia. The taunts and snobby attitudes of her fellow apprentices serve to further undercut Elina's self-esteem, but she vows to do her best to master the flight of spring and soon proves worthy of her appointment. When the trickery of Laverna threatens to stop the flight of spring and destroy Fairytopia forever, it falls to the new apprentices to save Fairytopia. Of course, Elina will play a pivotal role in the group's eventual success or failure. Prepubescent attitudes and shallowness reign among most of the apprentices, but most eventually see the error of their ways and the clear message is the importance of believing in oneself. (Ages 3 to 9) --Tami Horiuchi

My 4 year old has loved the Barbie Movies since she was 2 and this one, the third installment in the Fairytopia series did not dissapoint. I personally prefer the ones based on fairytales (Princess and the Pauper, Nutcracker, and Twevle Dancing Princesses) but I thought that this was the best movie of the Fairytopia series. The anamation is awesome. We saw this movie on Nickelodeon and recorded on our DVR. We have watched it at least once everyday since, great movie!

Although I am not a big Barbie fan, my 4 and 6 year old girls love this movie. It is a pretty decent movie-good messages about being nice and doing the right thing. Believe it or not Barbie is actually a strong role model. She solves problems on her own and doesn't wait for her Prince to save her.

I was surprised with this movie. The animation is still beautiful like all of the Barbie movies and Elena is a good role model, but I was disappointed with the plot and character development. In the past two movies Barbie must make sacrifices to save the land she loves, in this one all she has to do is be on somewhat good/bad terms with the other fairies in the school. I just didn't feel as if there was any growth in her character. Yes, she has many gifts - she is a very talented fairy but what does she do with them? She's also the only one who appears to know what is going on and how to the defeat the bad guy. I prefer the other 2 fairytopia movies.

Compared with some of the other Barbie videos I was slightly disappointed with this, but the target audience certainly were not. In the week we rented this film I have lost count of the number of times my children have watched it.

For reference, this is the third in the "Fairytopia" sequence which currently consists of:

    Fairytopia

    Mermaidia

    Magic of the Rainbow.

Before we first rented one of the Barbie videos for my daughter, I was expecting them to be trite, over-commercialised, and over-sugary. In general, however, I have been pleasantly surprised.

Yes, they do have a lot of commercial spin-offs and a high saccharine count, but the quality of the Barbie films we have subsequently bought or rented, including all three "Fairytopia" films, was significantly higher than I had originally expected. They have not just kept my children engrossed for hours - including my son as well as my daughter - but introduced them to some beautiful stories. Several - but sadly not this one - also introduced my children to some truly wonderful music.

On more than one occasion I have been listening to a CD of a classic such as Beethoven's pastoral symphony, or "The Queen of the Night's aria" from Mozart's opera "The Magic Flute", and my five year old daughter has recognised and expressed appreciation of the music, and correctly remembered which Barbie film had used it. ("Magic of Pegasus" and "Mermaidia" respectively.)

So I was very disappointed that "Fairytopia - the magic of the rainbow" did not continue this tradition: no great classics this time, the musical score is just competently written filler.

The color and animation in these movies is magnificent. Although the story line is geared for little ones older than 4 or 5, the action keeps my granddaughter entranced. This movie, while beautiful, was a bit over my granddaughters level of concentration, she still liked watching it. Not something she wants to see often.

Elina is a sweet, kind-hearted, selfless role model for a movie character. Great! But, about half way through this movie she enters a Guardian Training School which teaches her how to use her "powers"... Special abilities, giftings, super powers are fine with me. Unfortunately, some of her training and powers include sorcery - casting spells. Granted - they are spells "only to be used for good." But for this momma, spells are a big no - no.

As much as Barbie is a toy icon she's also decried by some as an unrealistic and misguided symbol of sexism in our society. All political considerations aside, we own a ton of the Barbie movies because we've found that they unfailingly have very positive messages for girls and really have very little to recommend against.

I won't go into the specifics of plot, which can be found elsewhere, but my daughter is 6 and anything involving princesses and music is where her main interests lie. She loves this movie and has watched it multiple times. She loves the music and the humor - it makes her happy, so it makes my wife and me happy.
