Product Description

Editorial Review

Barbie’s best friend Midge and her husband Alan (sold separately) are expecting their second child--a little girl! Happy Family Midge has a magnetic, detachable belly (baby fits neatly inside)--which allows her to transform from very pregnant to unnervingly svelte in a matter of seconds. If only it were that easy! While the magnetic belly isn’t the most life-like example for kids, it does allow younger ones to grasp the concept of a baby growing inside mommy. Midge comes dressed in a lavender floral dress, fuchsia heeled mules, pink earrings, and--of course--a wedding ring. Baby’s accessories include a 3-in-1 crib, changing table, and cradle, mattress, blanket, bathtub, two diapers, as well as tiny teddy bear, rattle, monitor, bottle, rubber ducky, and more. Safety information: This product contains magnets. Do not use around items that are sensitive to or affected by magnetic fields. This set also contains small parts and poses a choking hazard for children under the age of three. --M. Wilson

5.0 out of 5 stars there are other things on the shelves worse than this doll, July 24, 2003

I don't understand why so many people are saying that Midge is inappropriate for children. Since when is a pregnant woman inappropriate? Pregnancy and childbirth are a beautiful and natural part of life. Everybody gets here the same way so why are so many parents trying to shield their children from it? There are pregnant woman everywhere you go. It is natural for little girls to want to play Mommy and this doll is perfect for that!Midge also shows that a girl can grow up to "just" be a mommy if that's her goal. Just because little girls play with a pregnant doll does not mean they will become teenage mothers. It is a parent's job to teach their children about sex education and morals, not a toy's job. To all those people who find Midge "disgusting" - GET OVER IT!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect, October 18, 2003

I love this doll. I have long been frustrated that Barbies have little to offer other than a beautiful figure and an unrealistic slant on womanhood. This doll is a real woman. My daughter watched my son's birth when she was 2. She loves this doll, and it takes the focus off of looking like Miss Universe, and puts it onto the beauty of motherhood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Has the world gone mad?, November 6, 2003

What is the controversy with this doll about? I just don't get it. Women have babies. What is the problem here? Again, naturally speaking (evolutionally speaking), women have babies...

There is nothing dirty, mad, or yucky here. One woman wrote that her little girl thought a pregnant Barbie was "odd". Maybe the adults around her had something to do with that. Really, this controversy is quite scary. Enjoy the doll or simply leave it on the shelf if your child is not old, bright or reared enough to handle it.
