This review is from: Barbie Japanese Happy New Year Osbogatsu 1995 (Toy)
This is the first, original edition of the Happy New Year Oshogatsu Doll from 1995. Though not technically part of the Dolls of the World (DOTW) collection, this gorgeous girl will make a great addition to your ethnic dolls collection. You should be prepared, however, that the doll used for this Japanese new year celebration doesn't look Asian at all. In fact, Mattel used the Steffie face, with wide open eyes and fun puckered lips for this doll. I think of her as anime, actually, which gives her an exaggerated feel, and actually fits quite well. She is similar to a Takara Jenny doll. If you're expecting an Asian doll, you might try one of the newer version, which use the Lea sculpt. Her beautiful red kimono ties with an obi, and the geta (sandals) are nicely done and packaged in the box so you can see them without unpack aging the doll. The box is a very beautiful one--it opens with velcro on the side, so you can view the doll like a gift. This would be a difficult doll to debox, except that her outfit looks like so much fun to play with! I haven't been able to debox mine yet, so I can't tell you if the kimono is removable. Other dolls you might like are the newer editions from 2008 Happy New Year Oshogatsu Japan Exclusive Barbie Doll, Happy New Year Barbie, and Barbie Happy Chinese New Year Doll 2008. |
