4.0 out of 5 stars Cute idea, but.....
.....you can not buy refills for the cake/frosting mix. I called Mattel, and they informed me that there are no refills and no plan to distribute any in the future.

My 3 1/2 year old daughter really liked this toy, but has now lost interest since there are no more cakes to bake.

My suggestion would be to save the cake packet and try to duplicate the ingredients so...

2.0 out of 5 stars Good idea, but....
My daughter received this Barbie as a gift. Good idea but not worth the money, in my opinion. When we were mixing up the cake mix it had a horrible smell to it. My daughter plugged her nose and left the room. Not a good choice if you have a weak stomach. Do not waste your money, good thought and idea.

I have to say I think other reviewers are being a bit brutal about this toy. My secret -- lowered expectations! I fully expected this to be messy, and considering how sugary sweet the "cakes" are, I don't half mind that there are no refills available.

You get two dolls: pig-tailed Barbie with bendable legs and articulated arms, wearing an apron, and pony-tailed Kelly, sitting on a kitchen stool, ready to watch the baking. The stove/oven is a fairly clever setup. Using included bowl, measuring cup and spoon, you mix up a batch of strawberry icing, pour it into one stovetop "pan" and watch it descend into the cake pan in the oven; slide the pan to the other side of the oven using a lever on the back; dispense confetti decorations from a second stovetop pan; remove the pan and add sprinkles. Yum. Drinkable strawberry icing with sprinkles!

Aside: If Mattel had refills, you'd have to make monthly visits to the dentist, so count your blessings! Also, it's really easy to mix up something similar on your own -- put some powdered sugar and water together with a drop of food coloring. Learned helplessness, anyone? Show your kids how resilient and resourceful you are (and they can be)!

Anyway, apart from the "cooking", the stove is a bit nifty and the two dolls are cute. I'd like to give negative stars for educational value since an oven and stove don't really interact and Barbie's physique is so totally bizarre, but otherwise, lighten up -- it's pretty fun!

My only complaint with this item (besides the dolls' impossible-to-keep-on-or-keep-track-of shoes) is the packaging. There's nothing worse than having a child jumping with excitement as you unwind eighteen security twist-ties and bands ... and unwind ... and unwind ... and unwind.

Great toy- but will last only one use. No refills available.A little expensive for a "throw away" toy!!! A little messy, but alot of fun, but now it's over. We are going to try and find some other type of "cake mix" to use for it.
Bad deal from Mattel.

My daughter got this as a gift and she loved it...for all of ONE day! After she used all the mix and we couldn't get any more she totally lost all interest in it. I have written to Mattel on numerous occasions regarding this matter and have yet to receive a response. I would NOT recommend this product to anyone.

I glad I bought this on sale! My five year daughter and I tried "baking" and all it turned out to be was a huge mess! The icing wouldn't come out of the pots and the sugar crystal were falling out the second pot before we even finished filling the pan at the first station. The taste was terrible! All that trouble and my daughter couldn't even eat it! The only thing my daughter uses now are the dolls.

My daughter rec'd this set for Christmas and I gotta tell you that I really didn't think it would actually make a cake. Well guess what - it does and it is just the cutest toy. My daughter is 5-1/2 so this is not a toy she can do all by herself mom or someone older will have to help out but it is lots of fun and really does work! A+ on this one.

My Daughter LOVES to help me cook, now she pretends like her barbie is cooking. The down side to this product is the "icing" that comes with it for you to make, I would skip this....for one this....on the outside of the package it has one expiration date. Then on the icing package itself it has a totally DIFFERENT expiration date! ALL IN ALL this is perfect set for any barbie fan!

I didn't realize until we opened the box how messy this toy was. The icing mix smells awful and was a mess to clean up. I'm glad the mix is gone and I told my daughter she could pretend to make cakes in the oven. I would not buy any more mix even if it was available. The dolls are cute, but leave the mix out of the package, waste of money.

What a great toy idea! My daughter received this as a gift for her 7th birthday this weekend and spent the afternoon making a huge mess and having a great time ... but once the mix was gone, that was it. The stove becomes more junk in her bedroom and the cute dolls were put in her "Barbie box" with the others. If you can get this on sale for a few bucks, great -- it's a really cute toy. But if you have to pay full price, it's cheaper just to buy a basic Barbie and a Kelly doll and wrap them together.
