For months, my 1st grader has been bugging me about getting the latest Barbie movie doll. As of today, there were plenty at my local Walmart (in Santa Fe, NM) and were marked as $11.99. Because there was no scanner nearby, I gave in and relented as a behavior/nearing the end of the school year reward. Lo and behold when we went to pay, the doll rang up as **$5.50**!!! SCORE!!!
This Barbie is an odd mix of classic looks and a "sporty" body. Her hair is super soft and very brushable, just watch out for the half-ponytail and crown. Also, be VERY careful snipping the plastic bands, as Merliah's necklace can be easily snipped off too! And for what it's worth, this has got to be the easiest Barbie box I've ever opened (just pull the side tabs and the box can remain intact)! The bikini and mermaid tail are very pretty and shimmer just like in the movie (and books and stickers.. yeah, we've got those, too). My little girl commented about the gills that are painted on the fabric of the tail, so she's obviously enamoured with her puchase. This Barbie is also very articulated - knees and ankles are nicely flexible and it's very easy to stand Merliah on her surfboard and have to her lots of surf tricks. Personally, I think it was neat that Mattel included the surf board wrist "hook" as many pros use. The water effects on her hair and "body art" (also reflected in her surfboard, VERY clever) are neat and will be fun during pooltime in the summer. For some reason it bothers me when Barbie dolls have the permanent bent-elbow. We have a few dolls like this, and it's just... weird. Another negative: when Merliah wears her tail, the surfboard in the back makes Barbie stiff and awkward looking.
Obviously because of the clearance price, I'm giving Merliah 5-stars right off the bat. She seems very well made and sturdy, though from a few other reviews here, it definitely seems like the doll won't last from rough play by a younger child. I'm also giving this doll a high rating because all the pieces have a dual purpose. Obviously, that's the point of the doll, but it's awesome not having to worry where the board is, or where the tail is, etc. The pieces fit together and are stored within the doll (tail in the surfboard, surfboard in the tail). Again based on other reviews, I realize that this isn't what some parents want. But, THIS parent loves this feature!!! So great that my kid can just keep Merliah and all her accessories in one piece when it's time to put toys away.
Sorry for such a wordy review. I just love scoring an amazing deal on something actually useful, especially on Earth Day! :)
